I am booked on QF188 from HKG to SYD on 23rd Oct. Originaly it was scheduled to leave at 9:15 but its changed to an overnight flight leaving 23:20. I am going to ring Qantas so I would like some advice on how to approach it. Firstly, are they likely to change me to a CX daytime flight (my preferred option)? Secondly, if I am stuck with the overnight flight, should I insist on a small ammount of compensation (upgrade, points or whatever)?

As QF has informed you of flight change almost 2 months in advance I wouldn't expect much about rerouting with CX or compensation. If you want to use the daytime flight why don't you ask them to reroute you on QF flights via BNE?

Yeap... Always be friendly, but insist on the contract, the confiremd flight! You have booked an early departure and you have to arrive early! Ask 1st what they will offer, maybe they will offer the CX flight anyway- if not, just tell them that their is an earlier flight you wanna have....
I had the same problem. LH re-booked me from a non-stop flight to a direct service via FRA. I called them up, asked whats on offer- NOTHING. So I told them about the confirmed flight and that I am not travelling via FRA- finally I was given a direct flight with LX via ZRH. Best part, the LX-flight was sold out in my Class, so free upgrade PLUS the better service...
