We had an unusual sight today in "the ATL." A UAL 777 was parked today on the E gates. It was N777UA and it was a diversion from from Sao Paulo. I am guessing IAD had some Hanna-related delays forcing the diversion.

Fuel stop. Left GRU 2:37mins late due to catering issues. Arrived ATL 9:05a, left at 9:52a and arrived IAD @ 12:03p

I saw it parked at E26 or E24 on my way to Phoenix today... was wierd seeing no one servicing it... just sat in the pad with no jet bridge attached or ground servicing. It was wierd watching it taxi in the D/E alley this morning!

Can you expand on this at all? Were they short on food and had to wait for later delivery?

Maybe I'm missing something, but why does a late departure from GRU necessitate a fuel stop on the way to IAD ? At least, that is what your statement seems to imply.

Surely a UA 777 at ATL means that UA MUST be merging with DL.  Wink

I suspect the airplanes delay put it at IAD at the forecasted time of the highest impact from Hannah. With the forecast weather at IAD and at all of the normal 777 alternates being hit with high winds and heavy rain fuel could have been an issue. It appears the redispatch airport was MIA but a decision to press on closer to IAD for fuel was made.

The destination but also the alternates have to be accounted for. With the delay it put the airplane in a tight spot for safety and legality to continue to IAD versus a fuel stop at ATL.

Also it could have been due to ATC reroutes for Hannah. The overwater arrivals for IAD do come fairly close to the track of Hannah. With a reroute it could have impacted the fuel to the point of needing to stop.

Gosh I missed it, I was in ATL last week . It would have been pretty cool to get a picture of it since it's pretty rare . I've noticed that the traffic in ATL has decreased compared to last year.

Isn't this route normally operated by a 763? It was when I took it last year.

The aircraft was changed to a B777 at the beginning of September. This also resulted in the addition of a nonstop from IAD to GIG with a B767.

We had a UA 777 at LAS as well yesterday. Seen them before during the holidays but not this time of year..

Flightaware had it as UA9928 a 772 departing LAS to SFO.
