Northwest has a huge foreign hub with its partner KLM at Spichol Airport. This hub has a capability of operating 35 Northwest B747 and DC-10 at the same time : more than 50 gates just for Northwest.

I am wondering if Delta and AA have the major international hubs like that (they also have partners with European carriers such as SwissAir and Air France).

American Airlines doesn't have the same hub capacity, because its major European partner, British Airways, does not free slots up at Heathrow Airport.

Delta Airlines is very well-positioned. Charles DeGaulle airport, Air France's hub, has twice Heathrow's and Frankfurt Main's slot capacity, meaning that in the future, Delta can do a great job developing trans-atlantic traffic over there. Besides, Delta is already the major US carrier in Europe.

Sorry Delta Flyer, Schiphol does not have just 50 gates for NWA. NWA on itself has about 7 or 8 gates in operation and most of then only during the morning or early afternoon. When you look at the capacity of KLM (&KLMuk) and NWA together you will have a capacity of about 70 - 80 gates at a time. Almost all KLM flights carry a NWA flight number too (NW 8xxx).

At LHR UA operates 25 gates at terminal 3. Also British Midland, UA's regional partner operates 26 gates out of terminal 1. UA operates flight from LHR to EWR, ORD, JFK, SFO, LAX, and BOS. There will be future UA service from LHR to DEN starting in April2000.

Why on earth would United operate 25 gates at LHR for only 12 daily flights (1 EWR, 3 ORD, 3 JFK, 3 SFO, 2 LAX, and 1 BOS)?? There is no way that each flight needs two seperate gates everyday, or that multiple flights can't share a gate since they occur at different times of the day! If UA really operates 25 gates out of LHR, then what is the reason for this?

I have found European airports to be somewhat different that American airports in gates. In America, a single airline has exclusive use to a certain gate. The airline places their logo on the jetway and paints the back of the check-in desk and the walls with their colors, and place ads advertising new destinations, etc, on the walls. In European airports where the airline doesn't have a ton of flights, they have rights to a gate, but not to a certain gate. Then, the airline places a temporary sign with their name and flight number.

I think the reason for this is that US airports' gates are used all throughout the day, but in Europe the airline might only use the gate in the early morning/afternoon between flights to the US.

Has anyone else noticed this?

This happens moslty in international terminals, including the US. Hartsfield ATL is a good example of this. In the domestic terminal, national airlines basically "owe" a certain gate including all its rights to the gate for 100% of the flights. In almost all international terminals I know, there is no specific airline assigned to a particular gate. The companies have certain slots reserved at different times and will temporarily make use of them. That also happens in South America. However, there is a tendency of an airline having more rights than others, such as Qantas in the international terminal in Sydney, where most gates are occupied by their aircrafts and most oftenly the same. They have more slots available for them but might also 'share' the gate with another airline, provided they pay for that slot.

I haven't taken a good look at American's route structure lately but i know that during the late 1980's, Eastern operated hubs in Panama City, Panama, and Lima, Peru. I wonder if American still does.

United1636 must have misread the diagram in the back of the Hemispheres magazine.

United1636--those supposed '25 UA gates' at LHR are just gates that UA flights operate out of...they are shared with every other airline that operates into T3 such as AA, VS, etc. They color all 25 gates in the "United Airlines Gates Area" color because they have operated or do operate out of all 25 (never in the same day, though!)

There are actually 17 flights by UA out of LHR. IAD-3, JFK-3, BOS-1, EWR-1, ORD-3, SFO-2, LAX-2, AMS-1, BRU-1.
