British Airways and American Airlines are partners, yet they both serve a number of the same routes. Example: DFW-LHR, ORD-LHR, JFK-LHR, MIA-LHR, LAX-LHR, BOS-LHR

Do they actually compete on these routes? How does it work?

They don't have anti-trust immunity (not yet, at least), so they can't cooperate on transatlantic flights. If they can both make money saving the same markets, why not?

Once ATI comes through, I'm sure you'll see them start to divide it out (JFK goes all BA, ORD goes all AA, stuff like that).
