Just wondering because this could be a subject as a plane has just encountered this.

Very common. Especially in the vicinity of jetstreams and/or mountains.

The worst I personally have experienced has always been on the way to Hawaii in the winter, crossing a jetstream or two. A couple of times it was so bad that half the plane was sick(no joke), even some of the crew working the back end were green. Mind u crossing the rockies we've had a few good jolts.
