I was at SFO yesterday waiting to pick up a friend on United Shuttle. While waiting, had a great view of Air France 747 departing, and both Singapore Airlines and Philippines Airlines 744 arriving.

It was interesting to see the number on the Philippine plane started with an "N". I was under the impression that only US planes began with the prefix "N." Is this correct?

The registration number is indicative of what country the aircraft if registered in, not the country where the airline is based. This airplane is US registered, probably meaning that the aircraft is owned by a US based bank or leasing company. For example, I saw an Aeroflot 767-300 at LAX with Irish registration, the Russian airline leases from an Irish company.
