orf.at (german only) reports that OA will be shut down until the beginning of 2009. It will be renamed into Pantheon Airlines and Olympic again thereafter. Number of employees should be reduced from 8000 to 1000. EC is expected to give approval to this plan within the next hours.
Farewell OA. Anyone knows about route plans with Pantheon?

According to an article on aero.de (only in german) the brand Pantheon is only a temporary solution. After a successful restructure the Airline will be renamed Olympic Airways.
can only assume that there are some legal claims about the name olympic. which might only be free again when the company is done away. In the meantime, they might continue operation under a new company and brand. the articel says Pantheon Airways...

CORRECTION !!!
Please go to www.ert.gr and on the top right click on ''English'' the article is there and explains exactly what is going to happen. This is not anything new and has been on the cards for a while. In April 2009 OA will become a new company. The title of the thread suggests that OA will shut down '' until '' 2009 which is not true. Maybe something was lost in translation.
I cant post a direct link to the story as the PC Im on wont let me. I will try to post later.

Not a very commercial choice, since a Pantheon is a burial monument...Maybe Parthenon Airlines is much better
I think it's an great choice of name... Pantheon is the name for the Greek gods who reside on mount Olympus, so the connection to Olympic is strong, but discernable only for those who know it. For all others, Pantheon simply has a modern ring to it (the -on ending and the vocals A and O being very popular in marketing these days). So in this sad situation and the demise of a flag carrier, the new name still is the best aspect of it all.

ERT Article in English: (thanks to OA260)
Athens have been satisfied with the information as per which the EU Committees College will approve the streamlining plan for Olympic Airlines. As per the Transport Ministry's proposal "Pantheon" will cover the Olympic Airlines flights gradually and adopt its sign and name. Then, a new company will be formed with the same name and sign; however, it will be smaller that the present one. Mr Kostis Hatzidakis reiterated that the employees' positions would be secured. However, O.A. employees are reacting to the company's privatization.
Employees to be Secured
The 5,000 O.A. permanent employees will have three choices: they will be allowed to retire voluntarily, be transferred to another civil service with the same salary or hired at the new company with work contracts that will be signed from the scratch.
The Commission's official announcement is expected to be issued Wednesday noon and then Mr Hatzidakis will announce the government's solution at a Press Conference.
Meanwhile, the Commission's green light for the privatization of Olympic Airlines has sparked reactions among O.A. employees. Specifically, technicians held a rally at the Eleftherios Venizelos airport runway.

Well i say about time. For too long OA has left a blackened mark on Greece with it's poor service , late flights , cancellations , old aircraft e.t.c. I'll throw my support behind A3 anyday. As we say in Greek " exo to kako - mesa me to kalo "

A Pantheon can also be the collection of gods and "godlings" (angels, sprites, devils, etc.) in a given religion or cultural tradition.

Hmmmm. I read this morning that OA will keep its domestic network, while downsizing the international one to only 65% of current operations, thus firing thousands of employees.
Anyway, I still don't understand what's the idea behind changing the airline name just in order to reverse it again at a later stage. it would just confuse the passengers and the market. you want Pantheon? ok, so name it Pantheon and stick to it. if Olympic has such a bad reputation, I don't see the need to keep this brand.
As long as they fire the ones that got in for knowing someone and not the ones that actually are highly educated and add something to the company.

The Olympic brand is strong and the short transition will be just for legal reasons. The majority will know and there is strong feeling to maintain the name and Logo so Im glad they are. People still call it Olympic Airways and not Olympic Airlines !!

Well your suspicions or ideas are wrong. Alot of decent staff at OA have a very high level of education. Engineers and pilots are some of the best in the world . The people that have been brought in via the back door have tarnished the people that have studied hard and aways tried to do their best for the company.
Quoting Babybus (Reply 20): 'a lot of' is three words. It's a common mistake here on A.net.
Glad that you are so perfect .

So if they go from 8000 staff to 1000, and given that the B737 are used in Europe primarily, which planes will go.

32 Skyhigh: Keeping with Greek mythology, perhaps they should have named the Interim Airline as Phoenix Airlines!
