Well at least they have to start it by a certain date, though with the economy looking the way it is, I won't hold my breath waiting for them to start before April '10.

but AA is clearly taking the higher road by not starting the route at all instead of starting flights and then reducing frequencies like at least 3 other US airlines have done with their China routes.

Obviously, there are people who think taking no risk is a higher virtue than taking a risk and adjusting as the market changes.

Perhaps that distorted thinking is why so many AA people are frustrated that their carrier is not growing - and even go so far as to write to the DOT asking for other carrier's route applications to be halted.

I've got a better idea - learn to play with the big dogs or be content to stay on the porch.

after US got it I knew AA would too.

Now I have a feeling we will get a 200+ thread on why AA is weaker than DL for doing this.  duck   duck

weaker is probably a little subjective. My only point is that several AA and CO fans bashed DL for reducing ATL-PVG through the winter. the CO fans had to eat crow when CO applie to do the verysame thing not only for their yet unstarted PVG route but also for their existing PEK flight. The AA fans tried to act like AA was more valiant by not starting the route at all which is quite hypocritical. Every major US airline has changed its China service patterns in the recent past to deal w/ market weakness. To pretend that one airline is free from criticism over China reductions is laughable. To argue that an airline that never started a route has shown more forethought is pure hypocrisy. DL might have been 28% wrong about traffic but AA and US are clearly 100% wrong or at least they aren't willing to risk anything to find out - or AA wants to use a China deferral as a weapon in its labor battles while US simply doesn't have the right plane.
