They're eliminating their fuel surcharges.

Not bad for WS but what if Fuel decided to sky rocket in few months from now?

Simple -- add a fuel surcharge. (That's the idea and why it's called a "surcharge" -- it should come and go as needed.)

It would be wonderful if this move is followed by other cx even half as quickly as the baggage-fees spread throughout the industry (US anyway.)

Very nice, Westjet; I hope you get the publicity you deserve for this!

That's three airlines operating in the eastern triangle to announce this today, or at least technically similar moves... AC, WS, PD.

Kinda funny actually... at YOW there's recently been a new WS ad by gate 18 on about the whole two bags for free thing, only for AC to drop their second bag fee from next week. That ad can't have been there more than a week or so, it used to be for daily flights to Halifax if I'm not mistaken. lol

Exactly... Not used as an excuse to charge more like most airlines out there!

It'd be funny if they add a surcharge for checking your second bag, now that AC has removed this charge. Just to mess with the traveling public!

Is the real reason that AC dropped the second bag fee to mess up WestJet's advertising campaign?

Probably, since it happened only a few days after the Westjet ad's started.

Likewise, Westjet dropping fuel surcharges was probably a response to AC adding and including (not eliminating) their fuel surcharges into the advertised fare.

Sounds like an all out war between the carriers for PAX. Very interesting. Now only if WestJet connected with an international carrier, since most of my travel is on *A and not in NA, then I could switch!

I think it is great news for the traveling public. But, you will never see (1) United States air carrier dropping these fees. They are bring in to much money and they need build up their cash reserves. Besides, rumor has it. CO, DL, NW, AA, all are expected to report a small profit for this quarter because of the fuel prices droping.
