Last (?) Chance To Fly On An Il-18!

I just heared that the German spotters / travel organization airevents is trying again to charter an Il-18 to make a roundtrip flight from Chisinau (Moldova) and back, on sunday 30 november. They cancelled earlier plans because there were too few bookings, but now they got a better price (now from 379 euro for the two flights). As the Il-18 will probably be withdrawn next year, and passenger flights dwindling even in Somaliland, North Korea and Cuba, it might be our last chance to fly on one.
They need enough bookings by 1 October and then they decide a go or no go, so please let them know.
Disclaimer: I am not involved in the organization and they didn't ask me to post it. I just post this as an enthousiast who wants to fly again on an Il-18 and who feels that every Il-18 or propliner or classic fan should have an opportunity to fly on one (again).

They sent emails to their mailinglist. I guess they want to test the waters before 1 October before putting it on the website, so there is no risk that they announce it, people book and then they have to cancel it due to low demand. Or maybe it will be there sooner. Send them an email I'd say.

Rather cancel a tour due to low interest than not promoting it, well, that´s my opinion anyway.

You coud fly JED-JIB on the -18 0500-0730 (assuming, of course, you could get a Saudi visa). And you could then spend a night in Djibouti and fly from JIB to SAH for £96, then explore a bit of Yemen, before flying home or onto DXB (Yemenia or Emirates) to SHJ (AirArabia)...

I did not receive anything from them via E-Mail. 349.- is a tough price but worth to pay. I hope they send out some more news about it.  Smile

5V has one Il-18 operational, in LWO, but I haven't seen it move for some good two years now.

At the moment, will not your last chance to fly on an Ilyushin IL-18. As Pearson said, the Jeddah - Djibouti route and the Djibouti - Mogadishu - Hargheisa route is operated by Daallo Airlines with an IL8 wet-leased from Phoenix Aviation.

Due my job, I must to take it twice or three times a year and is a great experience to fly in an "oldie" like this with a very capable crew.

And, if I don't remember bad, JS use to fly it on domestic and charter flights from FNJ.

Regards,

Gerard

True ! That's why I put a (?) in the header. I might try to fly that route one day, the problem is it's very hard to get a visa for Saudi Arabia, while Mogadishu might just be too unsafe.
With Air Koryo the problem is the Il-18 isn't scheduled on any service. If it would be guaranteed say every tuesday to Beijing this airevents flight wouldn't be so urgent. But now with the Tu-204s we might see their Il-18s less and less.
Same with the single Aerocaribbean pax Il-18. It is stand by and sometimes doesn't fly a whole month, then suddenly it flies 3 times daily on the route Havana-Santiago de Cuba, but noone here has the patience to wait a month in Cuba asking daily if it flies or not.

Once you have business at Saudi Arabia and got the first, is not complicated to get Visa to fly to this country.

Unsafety in Somalia? Are you joking? Big grin I must to fly to Somalia twice a year due business of my company in Mogadishu and Hargheisa and always I have "company" of two french "friends" that are my translators, auditors and bodyguards. I never had any problem at this country: people is very friendly and not always with a smile in their face but with kindly with the foreign people that try to make business in their country.

Normally, I arrive to JIB in an Airbus A330 of Air France; from here I take the Ilyushin IL-18 to Mogadishu and after two days at the main city of the country, I take again an Ilyushin
IL-18 or Antonov AN-24 to Hargheisa. Here, and after spend one day, I take a Fokker F50 of Ethiopian that leaves me "safe" (in words of my "friends") in Addis Abeba.

Talking about Air Koryo, I read an article in the Airliner World October issue about the use of its IL-18 on charter basis to VVO and domestic flights.

And, finally, Aerocaribbean uses the IL-18 on the HAV-NAS route on summer. My sister in law had flown on it last year after contract a one-day trip from Cuba to Bahamas excursion.

Regards,

Gerard

My contacts confirmed the cargo one is flying regularly but the pax one is stand by and only flies when the ATRs can't manage to do the schedule, so the chance of getting on an Il-18 if you book an ad random to Nassau aren't probable.
Plymspotter, hope you can make it! Another friend sold his car to get on Concorde, but reading between the lines in your trip reports you don't have a car to begin with  Wink

I recently flew on an IL-18 HAV-HOG-HAV ... about CCP140.00 for the round trip! (Around CA $175.00)

I bought the ticket from Cubana, but the aircraft was operated by Aerocaribbean.

You know, ironically, I've just saved up £600 and was about to buy a car with it... chocks, guess that I'm going to spend the money on this now! I'm already working out a cheap and interesting route to Chisinau;

Luton-Cluj (Romania) on WizzAir A320 for £25
Cluj-Bucharest on Tarom A318 for £40
Bucharest- Luizi on Tarom ATR43-500 for £40
Luizi-Chisinau by bus/coach/train
Then returning either:
Chisinau-Odessa by bus
Odessa-Constanta by bus
Or:
Chisinau-Bucharest by bus
Bucharest-Constanta by bus/train
Constanta-Pisa by Ryanair on B738 for £15
Pisa-UK by Ryanair on B738 for £15

The trip sounds good to me Big grin
