Hi there

I need to book a flight in November from Athens to somewhere close to Florence. FLR would be ideal, but I will settle for PSA, MXP, or FCO and then take a train.

Obviously AZ and OA are out of the question. I would prefer Star Alliance, but all the flights are either via MUC, FRA, or ZRH, and all are around 500+ Euros.

I did find a decent fare on Air One from ATH to MXP (operated by Aegean Airlines). Is Air One reliable? Is Aegean reliable?

Any other airlines I could consider? Maybe Meridiana?

Cheers

Try Easyjet from Athens to Milan Malpensa.

About Aegean is a great airline with agreement on LH and AP flights. With little luck, you could fly on the new Airbus A320.

Or try My Air flights to BRI and VCE operated with new acquired CRJ-900's...

There are a lot of chances and options...

Regards,

Gerard

A3 and AP are both partners of Lufthansa. A3 operates brand-new A320's on the MXP route which are really nice and also the airline is very reliable as well as recommandable.

Alternative routing could be ATH-IST-MXP. Also Star Alliance and often some special offers on the MXP routes.

Maybe OU via ZAG? The flights may be too infrequent for a good connection. I don't know.

ATH-RIX-MXP on BT would be around 200EUR, depending on dates needed of course.

To get to Florence, train-wise I think FCO is more convenient than MXP. (PSA of course the most convenient).

To get from Malpensa to Florence is not extremely convenient.

From Terminal 1 (Air One, Aegean), you will need to take the Malpensa Express to Milano Nord, then the subway to Milano Centrale and then the Eurostar to Florence. Will take you over 4 hours.

From Terminal 2 (easyJet), you can either:
1) take the bus to terminal 1 and then the same journey as above
2) take the bus (or taxi) to the village Gallarate, from there take the train to Milano Centrale and then change to the Eurostar to Florence

Will also take you 3-4 hours. Both options involve buses and/or subway transfers, IMO not ideal.

To get from Fiumicino to Florence, this is more convenient. You can just take the train from Fiumicino to Roma Termini and change at the same station to the Eurostar to Florence. Journey time 2:30 and no bus/subway transfers, only train-to-train at Roma Termini.

One-way tickets ATH-FCO on flyairone.it for November are prices at EUR 119 (incl. tax)

Air One also offers flights between ATH and BLQ with stop in NAP. New CRJ-900. BLQ-FLR is not that far either, maybe best option (after FLR or PSA off course).
Dep. ATH at 1405hrs, arr. BLQ at 1635hrs.
Dep. BLQ at 0840hrs, arr. ATH at 1310hrs.

And being local partner of Lufthansa, you can use your Miles-and-More to collect mileage.

Indeed, I just read a bunch of trip reports.

Thanks for the train info, very insightful. Actually the best would be to get all the way to Montevarchi, or at least Siena, as my grandmother lives close to Gaiole in Chianti and I don't want her to drive too far. I might consider just renting a car instead.

Unfortunately I have SQ's KrisFlyer.

Thanks for all the info.

Ah, why didn't you say that before

From FCO, train connections to Montevarchi are not bad. Depending on the exact train you take, it will take you between 3:23 and 4:05, with one or two train changes. There are multiple hourly connections between FCO and Montevarchi, so you don't have to worry about timings (you should take the morning flight then).

I think this is all together better than the (faster) train to Florence SMN; the comfort of Italian local trains is not bad and I'm sure your grandmother would prefer to pick you up in Montevarchi rather than Florence (I don't know the Montevarchi railway station, but I have been to Florence by train often enough to know that it is extremely busy).

The train from Bologna to Montevarchi takes about 2 hours. But then you need a bus or taxi to get from BLQ to Bologna railway station. Add to that the additional flight time, and I doubt that it's faster than FCO.

Renting a car can always be convenient. Then, my personal choice would be FCO over BLQ. From FCO it's one hour more to drive, but this outweighs the extra flight time (with the connection in NAP). Besides that, I don't know how much you know the Italian roads, but the A1 Bologna-Florence is my least favorite highway in Italy. (A brand new one is being built at this moment, but so far the road is extremely busy, steep and a lot of trucks - I didn't really like it when I drove it 2 years ago). In comparison, the highway around Rome is just busy but I found it way more comfortable driving.

Good luck!

Looks like I might end up flying to Bologna as my uncle lives there, and it might just be easier for him to pick me up at the airport and have my grandmother meet us there as well.

Quoting Joost (Reply 11):
Good luck!

Wow! Thanks for all the insight. I will always come back to you with questions on how to get around Italy on the ground.

Speaking of which... How are the train connections between BLQ and MXP? I will still have to go to MXP to catch my plane back to SIN, so I wonder if it's easiest to do it on the train or by car, and if by car, how long will it take?

Cheers

This is the same as between Florence and MXP. (The trains run Milano Centrale - Bolgona - Florence - Rome). So you can take the train from Bologna to Milano Centrale and from there:
1. Take the subway and the Malpensa express
2. Take a direct bus from Milano Centrale to Malpensa.

There is no direct rail connection between Bologna and MXP.

Car will take around 3 hours, depending on traffic.

Try Easyjet from Athens to Milan Malpensa.

The U2 fares for ATH-MXP in November start at 42 Euros. More likely you would pay around 72 euros which is the current price on Saturday 22 November. This sure beats the 500 euros you were quoting.
