NFL Teams Visiting OAK - Why Into SJC/out Of OAK?

I've noticed NFL teams that play the Raiders at home typically fly into SJC - whip up on the Raiders - then depart out of OAK...

SJC is 35 miles from the McAfee Coliseum, OAK is next door to the stadium.

Any idea why this is case?

-visiting team's practice facility near SJC?
-visiting team's hotel near SJC?

I am thinking you are right on both counts. Most teams, after a game, want to get out of town ASAP, so that would be why the aircraft depart from OAK.

Hotel and/or practice facility probably closer to SJC on the way in, OAK closer to the stadium for a fast getaway since they are already checked out of the hotel.

Most teams do the same thing going into Green Bay. Fly in to ATW, depart out of GRB.

This is also common in MLB as well where teams will fly into SFO as they stay in the city, and then depart from OAK after the final game. For baseball as they are there from 2 to 4 days it allows the players to be in the city versus in Oakland offering more for them to do.

It varies by team, and since a NFL team would fly in the day before there is not really a practice needed. They do have space at the hotel for meetings and walk through exercises... but it all depends on the coach and team.

I would venture to think the Raiders would have their own dedicated visitor's facility as there are 1:4 odds that both the 9ers and Raiders play home games on the same weekend. Just don't know where that facility is Smile

Pro teams do not use practice facilities on the day before the games. They fly in and generally go straight to the stadium for a walk through (in street clothes), and then go to their hotel where they are in meetings through the night. (If there is bad weather, they will use a ballroom at the hotel for the walk through.

On game days they eat and are taped at the hotel before busing to the stadium. After the game it is shower, bus, airplane ASAP.

This is the same way in Green Bay for Packers games. The Visiting team generally flies into ATW rather than GRB because the visiting team typically stays at the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel in downtown Appleton. However, GRB itself is not far from Lambeau Field, so the team will fly out of GRB right after the game.

One exception was two weeks ago when the Cowboys came to town. The Paper Valley had unintentionally overbooked before the NFL schedule was set, so the Cowboys stayed in Manitowoc instead. Not sure if they flew into GRB or MKE for there though.
