Hi!

I plan a trip around the world with STAR-alliance in October/November 2001. Does anybody know a flight (with STAR-alliance) from Australia/New Zealand to South America? I couldn't find a connection with VARIG or Air New Zealand.

Bye
Andreas

As far as I know, you'll find yourself at a loss there ... try SAA Perth-Johannesburg and then Johannesburg-Buenos Aires, but that's probably not the way you want to go. Otherwise, you'll have to fly via LAX. But have a great trip anyway!

Best Business Class: Royal Brunei. Best Economy: Singapore Airlines. First: please send money first!

In November last year I flew from here (NZ) to Brazil with United Airlines all the way. This was AKL-LAX-MIA-GRU, which is the only way you'll get from here to South America on the Star Alliance network.

Air New Zealand does have flights from here to Chile, although they are code shared with Lan Chile and fly Auckland, Papeete, Santiago.

Aerolineas Argentinas flies to Sydney in Australia and Auckland in New Zealand . Lan Chile flies the Papeete - Easter Island - Santiago route . And Qantas operates Sydney-Auckland-Buenos Aires service . But with Star Alliance memmbers I dont think you will be able to do it .

Before NZ & Varig joined the Star alliance, you used to be able to fly NZ from AKL to PPT, connecting with Lan Chile to Santiago via Easter Island. Last time I checked, you can still do this although Lan Chile is of course not a Star Alliance member. However, a minor disadvantage compared to the opportunity to have a look around Easter Is on the way, in my opinion.

Have a great trip.

Bummer that...

I'm going on a RTW in November, with the first leg being from New Zealand to Brazil, which will probably be on OneWorld. (QF and LA), and I am also searching for options on that leg.... Auckland-Buenos Aires-Rio de Janeiro or Auckland-Papeete-Santiago-Rio de Janeiro....

My travel consultant said it was a tricky one, but definately possible.

It is true tht Qantas is dropping out of the SYD-AKL-EZE, route soon. Instead they will operate the AKL-SYD flight with AirTN operating PPT and Lan Chile operating to Santiago.
They will still codeshare with AR on the SYD-AKL-EZE which is operated by the A340.
I think if you want to go to NZ through South America you will have to take Lan Chile and then Connect on to the worlds warmest welcome, AirNZ.

Have a great flight though, and post a Trip[ report.

Cheers

Having just been in Buenos Aires, and with friends spoken with the QF airport manager there, QF are NOT planning to stop flying to Buenos Aires, the flight loads are exceeding aircraft capacity and infact QF are looking to increase the flights when additional aircraft become available, when this is he couldnt say. Thier is a rumour that two of the flight will continue to Sao Paulo as a 'shuttle' service as 25 percent of pax on the syd - akl - eze route are from brazil.
The star alliance has no network that connex the south pacific via south america you have to travel via North America.
Enjoy your trip.

If you want to make your life easier, I would suggest AKL-EZE connecting to EZE-GIG. Flying all Aerolineas Argentinas, and probably staying in the same Int'l terminal would be better than having to change airlines and make many stops (Papeete, Easter Island and Santiago). I think 3 is better than 1. If you want to start getting your 'round the world fare, you may want to look into finding a cheap 1 way from AKL-EZE on either Qantas or Aerolineas. Or if those are all expensive buy a round trip and don't use the return. Then start using your Star Alliance package by flying on a Varig 737 EZE-GIG. Or you could fly all star alliance and connect in LAX on NZ or UA and then fly RG to GIG with a stop in GRU. Whatever you do, enjoy your trip.

1. Star alliance has no "direct" Australia-Sth America route
2. Air NZ does NOT codeshare with LA from PPT-SCL (opposing alliances!), nor does QF any more.
3. Take a oneworld 4 continents fare. It is a little more expensive but you don't need to worry about mileage and it gets you to and around Sth America very nicely. I am in the middle of a trip on this fare at present including an Australia- South America leg:

I did: ADL-MEL-AKL-PPT-IPC(easter island)-SCL-LIM-CUZ-LIM-MAD-BRU. Coming home it will be BRU-HEL-TLL-HEL-SIN-ADL.

Great flexibility and lots of cool airlines!

I flew the SYD-AKL-EZE route a few years ago with Aerolineas Argentinas. I would suggest you avoid that route AT ALL COSTS! Without exaggerating, that was the single worst flight of my life. I would try flying via North merica if I were you with AirNZ or United. Enjoy!
