I had a chance to fly a few B-listers in and out of PDK and ATL this weekend for the grand opening of Tyler Perry's new studio.
Im told this is over 200,000 sq of renovated Delta buildings and 30 acres of "backlot"
My question is does anyone know the history of these buildings? Purposes/dates etc. Im told they were extremely run down and in a neglected neighborhood.

Where in the ATL is it? Good to see Tyler Perry doing so well, hopefully it bodes well to some of the local population. Sorry, I'm not from there, but my in-laws live there and spent quite a bit of time in ATL. I definately have to ask my mother-in-law, she's a fan of Tyler Perry's work.

The studios are near the run down Greenbriar mall in SW Atlanta. The BBC states that the location is a former res and finance center.
It must have been long ago. Greenbriar was more in vogue in the 60s so I can see it in operation possibly before the new terminal was built and when the old terminal was in the area the HQ is in now.
Of course the studio and all the buildings are new so I doubt there is any remnant of Delta's past.
Still the new studios will help ATL and DL gain more visitors/passengers.

My wife said she passed by the Greenbriar Mall many times. As you say, run down. Next time we fly out that way to visit with my in-laws I'll ask around. Then again, they've only had a house that way for almost 20 years, but half that time we were all in Germany with the military. Goes to show you though, it seems people in ATL may live there but aren't from there.

Yes DL had their reservations center at this location opposite the Greenbriar Mall (tidbit fact, the first mall location of Atlanta based Chick-fil-a)
I am not certain when DL left to move into their new site in Hapeville next to the airport...I think it was in the early to mid 80s. I noticed that there was an extensive restoration of this building as it lay dormant for many years. Not the best part of ATL but maybe a comeback is in store.

DL Reservations move from Greenbriar to a building on the headquarters' campus (about 1km from current Res center) occured sometime around 1977 or 1978.
After using the Greenbriar facility for storage, and sitting largely vacant, DL later sold the property to Lazarus Property Corporation in 1998. The property eventually went into foreclosure and title passed to Lehman Brothers, who sold it to the Ben Hill Methodist Church in 2002 for USD7.6MM. They had planned to raize the property and erect a new church, but these plans never materialized.

DL also had their flight control department at Greenbriar, along with their IT operation. Greenbriar even had its own city code, GRB

A minor celebrity. Actor / playwright / director, etc. In most cities he would move about unnoticed, but Atlanta takes any connection to fame VERY seriously.

Thanks for the info. I was under the impression that he renovated the former Delta buildings but it doesnt sound like that is the case and they were raized.
Tyler Perry has won a few emmys and has two shows on TBS "Meet the Browns" and "The house of Payne" This is the first major studio owned by a black person. Hence why Will Smith, Oprah and others were there for its christening.

Thanks for the replies, travatl, netjetandy, and SalMonela (love that moniker!). I could have wikied, but figured somebody could give me a nutshell explanation.
I also think this is interesting that another former aviation facility is being converted to a television or film studio. The other one is the McDonnell Douglas plant in Long Beach.

Ok, that would splain why some of the Y messages I see at work have a GRBDD... address, for when I saw them, I thought why the hell this message was coming from Green Bay (also GRB).

Of interest, maybe to some, is the Eastern Airlines reservations center, which used to be on the northside in Cobb County ... the building site is now the location of the Cobb Energy Center performing arts complex, after doing duty (as a parking lot) for several years for Cirque Du Soleil.
