Just posting this because I hadn't seen or heard this discussed anywhere (and a search turned up nada).
Tomorrow I'm flying CLE-IAH on CO, then returning Friday (flights 1545 and 1544 should anyone happen to be in either airport on those dates ) and at about 3:00 today my cell phone lit up "Continental Reservations"
Fearing a schedule change I answered and got something like (very roughly paraphrasing) "This is Contnental Airlines NEW automated telephone checkin calling for Lincoln King-Cliby. If you answer just a few quick questions I can check you in. Would you like to check in now?"
I answered Yes, the auto attendant proceeded to confirm "There is one person in this reservation traveling from Cleveland, Ohio to Houston Bush Intercontinental. Is Lincoln King-Cliby under the age of 13 or traveling with an infant on lap?"
I answered No.
It then asked if I wanted to pick up my boarding passes at an airport kiosk or have them faxed. I said "Kiosk".
It thanked me for checking in and offered to transfer me to an agent if I had any questions.
Just curious about when CO rolled this service out, if they're calling everyone or just passengers meeting certain criteria, and general thoughts about it.
On one hand I think it's kind of cool on the other I'm not sure how useful it really is -- you can't choose seats, you don't seem to have any control over when it's going to call (heck, I didn't even know it would call).

I personally do not like to be bothered by telephone unless it is absolutely necessary. Send me all the emails you want -- So I can read and respond in my own time frame. However, there are others out there who would probably love this service. If nothing else it presents the recipient of the call the opportunity to look cool and important while answering their cell phone
I've travelled the world and the seven seas. Everybody is looking for something.

But when did that start? I've never heard of such a service from CO. I flew them about six month ago and didn't get it, but I did book my flights via Orbitz. Let me tell you about that obnoxious phone system though. Called me 5 times before departure. I quickly deactivated that! But checking in via phone would be cool if I have no internet access.

Quoting Sflaflight (Reply 2): But when did that start? I've never heard of such a service from CO.
Those were my biggest questions... the recording emphasised the word "NEW" and I didn't get called for my last set of flights on CO only a few weeks ago (except by humans when the return flights were cancelled) -- and CO usually makes relatively big announcements about new "toys" like their PDA checkin -- I haven't seen anything of the sort for this service.
Reminds me of my last trip with NW... 4 more or less identical, full fare round trips within a 3 month span CLE-DTW-PLN/PLN-DTW-CLE. Not a peep from NW on the first 3 or for the outbound from the 4th one, but the day of the return I got something like sixteen calls in about a 10 minute period.
They all started something like "This is Northwest Airlines with an important flight status update..."
"Flight 1234 departing Pelston is estimated to depart 1 minute late"
"Flight 1234 arriving Detroit is estimated to arrive 2 minutes late"
"Flight 1234 departing Pelston is estimated to depart on time"
"Flight 1234 arriving Detroit is estimated to arrive 1 minute early"
... and on and on. Couldn't figure out why it stated or how to make it stop. And then just as suddenly as the calls started they vanished. The flight left on time and arrived on time.
Hopefully this service from CO won't turn in to that!
