Finally !

Because of the low grade given to GIG (Airport) on the Olympic Bid process, and after a huge pressure from Rio's State Governor, the Federal Government of Brazil included two airports on a private auction process, Rio de Janeiro International (GIG) and Campinas International (VCP).

The auction is expected to take place during 2009.

From the Brazilian Press, seems that France and Germany are very interested on take part of GIG's process (as well as TAM) which shall include some improvements now under way on both terminals. VCP, a very important cargo hub for Brazil and in the heart of São Paulo state, would attract more operators from logistics area (even with a huge project to become main Brazilian Hub in the near future)

Back to GIG, Infraero is now providing some interesting updates:

- General Improvements on TPS1 which will be in fact a preliminary retro-fit (TPS1 will be closed during 1 year for a complete improvement)
- Changing the old monitors with 360 new LCD Monitors on Both Airports
- Improvement on TPS1 Gates
- Improvement on taxiways and patios for A380 operations (and better A346 operation)
- TPS2 will be completed.
And more 9 items..

Link in Portuguese for GIG improvements
http://www.infraero.gov.br/impr_noti_prev.php?ni=9450&orig=home

Seems that Brazil will have by 2010/2011, better airports to support and help the country to continue it's growing, as well as to allow more operations during the World Cup in 2014. GIG is the airport with more room for charters and extra-flights during the Cup (will be operating at 60% of it's capacity, closer to 25 million pax/year) and it's expected to attract more visitors.

Would the Brazilian government require whoever wants the concession of VCP to include a VCP to Sao Paulo reliable rail-link to the proposal?
VCP can be wonderful for freight, but if they want to catch more (international and long-distance Brazilian) traffic, VCP, other than to offer cheap landing fees and operating costs, ought to have an easy+fast link with Sao Paulo (Paulista or Morumbi areas?).

Some competition will be good even for the other airports. Infraero will probably change a lot the way to take care of the others airports as you can imagine how competitive one airport managed by Fraport or ADP could be in order to attract traffic. Lower fees, better services... even Guarulhos and Brasilia will be affected

No, this is another auction, the Campinas-São Paulo-Rio de Janeiro high speed train.

That's an interesting point, if a "new" VCP with lower fees can attract international traffic (and domestic services to places like POA and MAO) and sustain it.

Given the time to get to/from VCP now, I don't think a cheap VCP would work that well for flights between Sao Paulo and CWB, POA, GIG, CNF, GYN; most likely it'd for flights between Sao Paulo and CGB, CGR, SSA, REC, FOR, SLZ, BEL, MAO, BSB (to BSB Sunday evening / Monday morning, from BSB Friday afternoon/evening).

IMO they need to focus on markets where ties are strong. MAO would be a perfect addition considering the size of business between the Campinas metro area and MAO (electronics and food supply to MAO, cargo in general). I'm sure VCP can sustain at least a daily non-stop to MAO.
If they add such flights, one by one, more destinations can be sustained over there. It's like a domino game.

Swissair used to fly out of Viracopos back in the day. Very convenient. Quick and easy to get on and off the plane. I think it was Buenos Aires - Viracopos - Rio - Geneva - Zurich.
On a brand new MD11.

It would be a grat benefit to improve that airport. Campinas has a very large business community. Holambra for the Dutch, Mercedes Factory for the Germans, and all the American Tech companies in the area.

At least it's some progress! Let's see if all this really becomes reality next year.

Concerning GIG, I still think that a rail link to downtown Rio and Zona Sul should be in the package. Rio's subway systems is ridiculous. Many of the city attractions can't be reached by using the subway. Even Brasilia has a better subway system than Rio.

In regards to VCP, I believe it has the potential to become a major int'l cargo hub. ON the other hand, I don't think VCP will ever work as an replacement airport for Sao Paulo. It could only be an additional option. Not even after the high speed rail link.

You're right. The list of company's with factories (some with offices also) near Campinas is very extensive and it's more (factories) than any city in Brazil including São Paulo. You may find huge operations from Bosch, GE, Motorola, 3M, Eaton, Mahle Metal Leve, IP - International Papers, Tess, Honda, Rigesa, HP and many others.
But i believe after VCP-MAO the first international flight should be VCP-EZE.

GIG will got the link with one station on the High Speed Train Rio-São Paulo. It will connect the subway system (Downtown station at Central do Brasil) of the city with the high speed train.

VCP can't be a replacement for São Paulo, but may be the best alternative for people from Campinas area which means it could be at least a 3.5 million pax airport / year in 3 to 5 years. But airlines with hub at Sao Paulo airports will not be interested in develop a bigger operation at VCP as they will try to continue to attract this market from Campinas to it's current airports.

I do believe VCP is closer to São Paulo than HHN from Frankfurt. In 2006 i flew out of HHN and it took me 1h40min by bus from Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof. From a Bus Terminal in São Paulo or subway station in Tiradentes Avenue (São Paulo), would take you no more than 50 minutes to reach VCP.

I think the brazillian airports need a look and feel where you feel fresh, open and spacious. It is the first point of entry to many tourists.

More glass, more vibrant colors, more space would be a good starting point.

No doubt. I think this competition will over time push other airports into the private sector. I can certainly see other governors asking for the same thing, although I think it will take a few years before we start seeing that happening.

Meanwhile, the new international airport for SP is apparently in this package, too. Interested to see what the plans are.

Lets see if further developments would bring more airports to the same direction. I'd ratter see a complete process where all airports will be auctioned in groups, the best ones with the smaller ones. I don't think it's fair to "sell" the premium airports where the government will continue with the mission of improve the small ones.

It's just barely closer. It can be the same distance if you're from the South Zone of São Paulo. It can take longer to HHN because of topography and lack of higher capacity roads on the Hunsrück, but most of the time, it doesn't take that long. You say 50 minutes, but you're pushing it a little bit.

Thanks Coiote. Have you ever seen any new activity at GIG during the past weeks ? Last thursday i verify that there are some improvements going on (not only the "men at work" sign) and i hope they begin TPS2 conclusion soon in order to allow TPS1 to be closed (even 50%)

Another company announced today interest on GIG: Aeropuertos Aregentina 2000.
They said to Brazilian Economic Newspaper Valor that GIG needs about US$ 1.2 billion in investments to reach a 25mm pax/year capacity in 3 years.

Seems that the first auction will bring some competition!

VCP or Brazil for that matter will have a hard time becoming much of a cargo hub as long as Brazilian customs continues to operate the way it does.

Sadly Customs in Brazil is terrible and slow burocracy that hinders commerce. From their slowdowns and strikes, reluctance to get with the remainder of the world and use electronic cargo clearance instead of stacks of paper documents, to unequal and often frequently changing regulations, and rising fees they charge, the Brazilian authorities are not much help to global logistics.

If not for Brazil being such a large market itself, many cargo carriers would happily avoid airports like VCP.

Unfortunatelly, Brazilian Customs will not change the way i expect.... and for sure, Brazil will continue far from being a real cargo hub. VCP will continue to deal just with Brazilian demand.

Because of the low grade given to GIG (Airport) on the Olympic Bid process

Fantastic news. I have been one of the vocal critics of GIG terrible and shameful situation. Already years ago I had mentioned many times the deteriorated state of GIG conditions which would not provide minimum and adequate comfort level to passengers. It was therefore not surprising that I've learnt GIG had the LOWEST score of all aspects considered by the Olympic Committee regarding the Olympics in Rio. GIG got only 3 out of 10!

The fact that GIG is the main door for Brazilian tourism and yet another reason for a renewed upgraded terminal 1 building!

Yes Hardi, and seems that they will be fixed soon. Infraero expects GIG TPS2 to be completed by 2009 in order to allow TPS1 to receive it's long overdue improvement.
By 2012 GIG is expected to be ready to take care very well of 25 million pax. Modern, Beautiful and Comfortable, could become the best airport in South America as it's far from being saturated.

25 Rafabozzolla : But you seem to be forgetting the frequent and huge traffic jams, not only in São Paulo but also at Castelo Branco highway.
26 Hardiwv : Indeed, some weeks ago I had friends from Rio visiting me in AMS and when they returned to Rio with TAP they had a terrible time to reach their homes
27 2travel2know : For that matter include CM PTY hub to the list. I've been to LIM and when it comes to an international hub, PTY is light years away from LIM.
28 LipeGIG : Hardi, they just need to complete the terminal which is now closed and makes easier any work. No more than 6 months to complete half of the terminal.
29 Hardiwv : Ive been to PTY and LIM (more than once) and in my view LIM is much superior to PTY. LIM also has the advantange of more international services plus
30 ZWZWUnited : It will be nice to see some enhancements at GIG, however I must admit that their airport feels SO outdated now that it has a groovy, unique retro-thin
31 LipeGIG : Hope we will celebrate this by 2010 With full areas available on both T1 and T2, Dufry (Duty Free Shop) probably will be able to increase both stores
