Drove past EDI airport today and saw 5 Jet2 a/c parked up at the cargo ramp, looking very inactive.
What's the situation with these planes?

What's the future for the company?

I havn't heard of anything out of the ordinary about Jet2.
Where these aircraft parked on remote stands? engines covered?

Could they not have just been inbetween flights?

There's flying and then there's flying

The cargo ramp at EDI is pretty remote. No the engines weren't covered, but they were just white and generally looked out of service.

I doubt it because they didn't look as though they were airworthy.

Jet2 have 3 B733QC aircraft based at EDI. These do some pax flights during the day, but are kept very busy at night flying up and down the country operating the Royal Mail contract. The mail flights alone mean Jet2 can afford to have them sitting on the ground during the day, however during the summer they are kept pretty busy during the day aswell.

Remember that Jet2 and Channel Express do have a selection of cargo aircraft, so it's probably nothing out of the ordinary. The airline itself doesn't have the greatest utilisation rate of it's aircraft anyway, and at a relatively dead period at the end of the Summer season, having passenger aircraft doing very little wouldn't be all that worrying either.

As for the future, well next year they seem to be focusing more on leisure routes, and building up the Jet2holidays brand with flights to Corfu, Rhodes, Heraklion, Dalaman, Larnaca, Paphos, Sharm el Sheikh etc, as well as internal holiday destinations such as Newquay and Jersey. It's good to see them starting to put their 757-200s to better use.
