I was searching for flights for a short weekend to Santo Domingo from Boston over Christmas Break and came across two flights that seemed odd. It appears that JetBlue is marketing a direct Boston to Santo Domingo flight. I could only find this flight just after New Years, however I didn't look too hard. This flight is not listed on their rout map and no announcements have come about that i have heard of. The flights are 797 BOS-SDQ and 798 SDQ-BOS. Anyone have any additional info on this flight?

They are calling it a Seasonal "Holiday Shuttle". Last year, for about a month, they operated BOS-STI. The flight went out full to STI and came back empty. After Christmas, It was the exact opposite. This year, I guess they are resurrecting this "holiday shuttle" service to SDQ instead.
Service is scheduled to start on December 20th, but its bookable from December 18th through January 5th, 2009.

With the aircraft likely sitting empty at BOS overnight, it shouldn't be too terribly hard for this flight to make money. Of course, the state of the economy is a big question mark-- as it is for every carrier on every new route.

Ha, at first I thought that was ridiculous but actually its not terrible because travelers get the whole day there then head to the airport a little after midnight and there you go.
So will this be profitable?
I mean I think its better then sitting at BOS all night but who knows.

I don't't think this flight is geared towards your typical vacation traveller. If it was the flight wouldn't be going to SDQ. This flight is surely geared towards Dominicans living in New england who want to go spend the holidays with their families whose other option right now is a much more expensive and longer route with any other major carrier with a plane change.

It will be interesting to see how the change to SDQ goes. The change from STI is probably better in the long run. Good luck JetBlue!

It's important to note that Latin American VFR traffic is generally much more tolerant of 'nontraditional' scheduling than other sorts of travelers. TA, CM, MX, and AM (amongst others) all have flights that arrive or leave in the middle of the night.
