Finnair Gate Assignment At JFK?

Hello,

Easy question:

I know FINNAIR operates out of T8 at JFK. Do they have a dedicated gate or do they move all over the terminal.

The Finnair and AA (Codeshare) websites do not show gate information for this flight.

Also, just curious, will any quality photography be possible through the windows of T8 - or do the windows have those damn dots (like at DTW) or heavy tinting that mess up the autofocus...

Thanks for any info.

JA

I believe Jet uses the same gate at Terminal 8 daily and I believe Finnair does as well.

Finnair always uses the front concourse of T8 at JFK, the concourse near where the customs and immigration facilities are located.

I managed to get a nice shot of a Finnair MD-11 arriving at the gate in JFK, back in May of this year, can't remember which gate it was but it was within the first 12 gates at the terminal.

Here is the link to the MD-11 section of my blog where the picture I'm talking about is located:

The MadDog is leaving JFK...
This is planned to be the last winter AY MD-11 serves the JFK route, will be replaced by A333 in April 2009.

That is why I will be at JFK this Thursday (Oct 23rd).

To begin MY Finnair MD11 Farewell tour. I will be connecting at HEL to ARN for a weekend of sightseeing.

Can't wait for my first ride on the MadDog!!!

I hope row 52 has nicely aligned windows for my flight. I couldn't get the forward (less cramped) Y section seats even though I booked back in Mid-July.

I wrote to the Finnair Media relations people about my little adventure and they very thoughtfully sent me some MD11 postcards, a Finnair Pin and a ID strap you wear around your neck (I know they are called something else).

I have already preordered 2 MD11 Models (1 with Santa & 1 regular) from the Finnair onboard duty free for my return flight. Can't find these 1:200 scale models anywhere around here - even Ebay.

I know I am "DC10sRule" but really, I should have called myself "MD11sRock" !!!!!

Take Care!

Row 52 is not so very good seating - 3-4-3. You should try internet check in around 24 hours prior to your flight. I also had seats (4 persons) in the aft section of the aircraft but managed to change them to the 3-4-2 section when doing the check in via internet. So I think you should try.

Have a nice flight!

That particular area on AY MD11 provides about the crampest scheduled flight seating anywhere, especially the window seats. The aircaft frame is narrower back there, but there still is the same number of seats side-by-side. What they do is that they "carve" the window seat backs to follow the narrower wall line. So the window seat back must be some 2 inches narrower than the other seat backs. I hope you are a very, very slim person.

Let me know how row 52 works out! If you could, take a look at row 49 for me...that's where I'm scheduled to sit next Friday (Oct 31) on AY 6!! I think I'll try to get to JFK early though....I hear the seats in the forward cabin are blocked off until airport check-in, at which time they assign them to pax on a first come, first serve, basis. I'm thinking Row 27 (???) would be ideal....right next to the engine and wing!

Does anyone know which row might be the best for a engine + wing shot? It has to be 25, 26, or 27...

How about light? These days I hear the sun doesn't rise until about 8am in Helsinki? The flight arrives at 08:50, so, that might just be OK. I'm wondering if it would be better (from a photographic perspective) to ask for an "A" seat, or "K" seat.

Maybe our Finnish friends can help?  Wink

This is an old image. There is no more row 7 in AY's M11.

That seatmap does not prove such argument. Have you guys flown on the AY MD11 or even know someone who would have experience sitting on these "carved up" seats?

Do you think the forward cabin seats might be available for internet check-in 24hrs prior or only airport check in??

I have seat 52A, and so far, from what I can see on the Finnair website (when I check my reservation), there is no one seated next to me (both B & C) so I might be OK if the armrest folds up.

Quoting FFlyer (Reply 6):

Unfortunately, I weigh about as much as Homer Simpson - 120KG / 240 LBS so I hope I don't get an equally large person right next to me!!  crowded  According to the Finnair seat chart, the fuselage does not "appear" to curve until around row 57 - I'm sure the drawing isn't that accurate but maybe someone out there knows exactly where the fuselage starts to tighten up in the back.

Quoting LAXspotr (Reply 8):

I'm back home late on the 26th so I'll let you know about that row on the 27th.
I wanted to be behind the wing to watch the awesome flaps, & other wing items. If I do move up, it will hopefully be next to the engine as well.  bouncy

Rows 21-28 are not open for cheaper tickets beforehand, but at check-in, all economy rows are open to you - so be online 24 h (or is it 36 h?) before your flight, check in, and get a better seat!  Smile

It's 36h before the departure. Be there, you can avoid the back cabin.

I have gate 4 as the Finnair gate, at least at some point in the recent future. Saw it on a webpost somewhere where someone was describing their Finnair experience and specifically referenced Gate 4.

I was sitting on one of those torture seats on JFK-HEL in June. Don't remember the row, but something higher than 50. You can best see the shape of the seat back when sitting behind one. Also the window side armrest is only about 1 inch wide, and very close to the wall. Clearly the window seat has taken all the squeeze-in needed to accommodate all the seats in the narrower part of the plane. I don't know if there are differences between individual aircraft, but this was one of those that don't have overhead air vents. I heard that some of the other AY MD11's have those.

OkAY, there is fire where there is smoke; "angst" doesn't come by itself. Trust me, I have flown really more than enough, and if I don't like something, there are reasons. By the way, I had a Y -ticket (not a discounted economy), purchased less than two weeks before the flight. They still assigned me the rear cabin. Upgraded me to Business on return flight, without asking for it, though.

Orginal AY aircrafts OH-LGA - OH-LGD have those but second hand aircrafts OH-LGE - OH-LGG don't have overhead vents.
