Why Doesn't WN Color In Letter On Their BPs?

Someone on another site made a comment about how WN saves money by not coloring in the A/B/C letter on their boarding passes, as using just the outline uses less toner.

I'm assuming that their boarding passes are on thermal paper, so toner use is a non-issue..but it got me thinking, why is it that they don't color it in? It makes it a bit harder to read, so I'm sure there's a good reason for it somewhere...

Thanks

Well, electricity is needed to heat the paper and if you don't have to heat as much paper you save. Think of this way, if they can save 1/1000 of penny on each boarding pass then after milliions of boarding passes thay can save some money.

Aren't boarding passes printed mostly at home by passengers?

The last few times I've flown - it appears to be about 50/50 at home printing vs airport printing.

I also discovered you can check-in on-line to get your place in the line at the earliest possible moment - yet wait to print the boarding pass when you get to the airport.

Saves scrambling for a printer in the hotel.

Actually, since the implementation of the new boarding process, boarding passes printed at the airport have the letter and the number filled in. The online boarding passes are actually printed with hollow letters and numbers! A bit of a switch!

A lot of people don't realize you can do this! There are still numerous passengers who have their boarding passes faxed to them by family members/admins because they are afraid they will lose their boarding position! Unfortunately, faxed boarding passes can't be read by the gate reader scanners!

Ah...so they're trying to save pax money...that's nice of them!

Had a co-worker who was on a trip to MSY - the previous time he flew, the faxed boarding pass came in garbled, so he had his wife Fed/Ex him his A Boarding pass....then he had the nerve to get mad at me for not telling him that you can print it at the airport beforehand!

Don't forget that you can also check in with your web-enabled mobile phones as well - that's usually what I do exactly 24 hours before pushback.

I know you may find this amazing but, not everyone that flys has a computer at home.

I'm actually quite curious about the answer to this question. If it is harder to read, why leave it that way?

I can see the idea they didn't want people using up so much toner on their inkjets, but I don't think the electricity argument is all that persuasive.

It's possible that they like how it looks.
