The following is a list of FL mainline routes and various performance metrics from Q2 2008. The data is from PAXstats, which sources the T-100 and DB1B databases from the DOT's Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

All financials have been normalized to a 750 mile stage, to allow for better comparisons across routes and carriers. RASM stands for Revenue per Available Seat Mile. Contribution yield is the effective remaining yield upon arriving at the hub. (Read: quality of feeding traffic)
Revenue per departure is listed on a segment and system basis. System revenue is all revenue associated with the listed leg, in one direction. Segment is prorated system revenue.

Although I do sometimes think these types of lists have to be taken with a grain of salt, perhaps a vote of confidence in the methodology comes when looking at what markets AirTran has cut. Although there are a few in the higher ranks, the huge bulk of dropped markets are in the bottom 30% of the list.

The bottom 30% are the 44 mark.ets #102 through #145. 29 of those are missing from the spring peak schedule.

Markets in the bottom 30% cut:

# 102 IND …. LAS
# 104 FLL …. PHF
# 106 MDW …. BOS
# 107 SEA …. ATL
# 115 MKE …. SAN
# 116 MCO …. SWF
# 117 HPN …. FLL
# 118 HPN …. RSW
# 120 BOS …. TPA
# 121 IND …. LAX
# 123 MEM …. MCO
# 124 MKE …. LAX
# 125 MKE …. DCA
# 127 SAN …. ATL
# 128 STL …. MCO
# 129 DAB …. LGA
# 131 LGA …. TPA
# 133 MDW …. MIA
# 134 FNT …. LAS
# 135 MKE …. SEA
# 137 BOS …. PBI
# 138 MDW …. MSP
# 139 MKE …. BOS
# 140 MKE …. SFO
# 141 MKE …. PHX
# 142 SWF …. PBI
# 143 ATL …. DAB
# 144 LAS …. ROC
# 145 PHF …. TPA
:
Markets in the bottom 30% still intact:

# 103 FNT …. ATL
# 105 PHF …. MCO
# 108 BOS …. MCO
# 109 MKE …. ATL
# 110 LGA …. MCO
# 111 BOS …. RSW
# 112 SFO …. ATL
# 113 BUF …. ATL
# 114 LAX …. ATL
# 119 MKE …. LGA
# 122 HPN …. ATL
# 126 MCO …. SJU
# 130 MKE …. BWI
# 132 ICT …. ATL (subsidized)
# 136 PHX …. ATL

Some of the "drops" could possibly be back next year...the return of SAN and SEA for example are likely not solid one way or another right now. But even if some of these markets do return next year, this list suggests why they are not shoe-ins.

Finally, from a local perspective (I'm in MKE) the meaningfulness of this list is also supported by the low ranking of MKE routes which aligns with the AirTran conference call where MKE was painted as a drag on the system.

MKE nonstop market ranking among the 145 AirTran city pairs:

#72 MKE-MCO
#95 MKE-LAS
#109 MKE-ATL
#115 MKE-SAN
#119 MKE-LGA
#124 MKE-LAX
#125 MKE-DCA
#130 MKE-BWI
#135 MKE-SEA
#139 MKE-BOS
#140 MKE-SFO
#141 MKE-PHX

Hey thanks found this one with the non normalized data! Nice research Knoope...I was going to do something similar, just not as in depth as you!

So what data is normalized? Is the rev/dep actual or is that normalized too??

Rev/Dep, in system and segment columns, is not normalized. All types of yields however (including RASM, ticket yield, and contribution yield) are normalized.

Yeah.... MKE had a somewhere in the neighborhood of a -16.03% profit margin in Q2.

...but then they cut routes like CLT-MCO, which is one of the better performers in the system. I'm curious what the method is to the madness.

So this is my first post, so take it easy on me  Wink. I noticed that BTV-BWI is relatively low and also has poor loads. Is this because it is a new station? Will it get better after a year or so?
71 ..... BTV-BWI ..... $7,337 ..... $8,634 ..... $0.11337 ..... $0.17265 ..... $0.04802 ..... 67.0%
Also note that this service started out with 3X daily, and now is at 2X daily as per the AirTran Website

FL loves to cut and run from stations or routes that don't make money quickly enough for their liking. That said, BTV isn't at the bottom of the heap by any means, and FL has to fly their aircraft somewhere.

People around here have thrown around the idea of FL getting some Q400s; BTV-BWI would be a great Q400 route.

We know that FL loves and will likely stay to some degree in MKE, and they are subsidized at ICT. SAN, DAB, and SEA have been cut.

That leaves the worst performing markets to be LAX, SFO, SJU, and PHX. Of those markets, which are in real danger? I understand anything is possible, but there are some cities that a carrier may justify a loss in because of competitive reasons. (i.e. I don't think they'd cut LAX)

I'd say PHX and SJU. Neither serves any real purpose in the network, and neither is so crucial that FL must keep it (IMO). PHX is one of a few markets where FL is squeezed by legacy hubs at both ends; I wonder how the fares on ATL-PHX compare to, say, ATL-DEN. F9 also provides access to PHX.

I guess all of that suggests that PHX might be in more danger than the others.

This may be evidence that FL's MKE "hub" plans are a little flawed. And surely is the reason they are not expanding more there. In today's enviironment, I could see them shrinking to the pre-YX battle schedules.

Great work. I love reading these Route Performance threads. Do you think SJU will improve over time/seasonally?

Is there a B6 Route Performance thread coming up?? I'd love to see how they are doing!  pray

SWF was #40 on the Ranking-by-Station list. And yet they're still operating from stations that were ranked between 41 - 58. I can't quite figure that out. I flew FL quite often to/from SWF, and the planes were always full. Other than JetBlue to Florida, the only service from SWF is on Delta (ASA) through Atlanta. There is also NWA through Detroit, but I don't know what will happen with the merger. There is also US Air Dash-8 service through Philadelphia, but the service is so abominable, I don't even think I'd consider it anymore.
