I know that all transportation companies get negative feedback (been there, done that). However, is Spirit really as bad with the lack of customer service and unavailable flights as they have been rumored to be?

In my experiences, the Spirit flight crew, and ground crew, are really great, helpful and friendly, as were the various reservation agents I had to speak to. The flights were on time, and uneventful. The problems encountered were in trying to process various changes through their website, which did could not be processed. They could only be accomplished by calling a customer service agent, which resulted in tying up a telephone for a wait time of half hour or more, each time.

I tried to call for loads and it was a nightmare, none of the people who answered had any clue what I was talking about. When I got to the airport, the people were fantastic. Doubly so for the agent in FLL where I was trying to connect. The flight I wanted to get on was not listed anywhere and I had no idea what happened until I heard the final boarding call for the flight.
After doing my best OJ impersonation (jumping over luggage as I raced through the airport, not the other stuff) to get to the gate he was able to process me and get me on the flight. They put me in the big seats both times and all of the staff I met was great.
In many cases their fares are below the cost of guest passes with my airline, so I've been pushing friends and family their way.
