Interesting AirTran Ad; Thoughts On Midwest

Today I drove down to Milwaukee to do some shopping and saw an interesting AirTran billboard. It featured Donald Driver (Green Bay Packers – Receiver) with the statement along the line of “At least he knows how to fly.”

This is really interesting from my perspective as AirTran does not serve Green Bay or Appleton Wisconsin (where most of the Packers live), and I find it strange that anyone would chose to drive nominally 2.25+ hours to Milwaukee to fly a specific airline (I do note that Midwest does serve Green Bay).

On the same trip a thought came to me about Midwest Airlines and the issues with the pilots; and how it might play out.

Overall, I am a lot more positive about Midwest Airlines future than some others on this forum.

I know that Midwest announced that it was intending to train its own pilots to fly the Republic E170s. However, I understand that the Midwest Pilots are balking at this due to the pay cut involved.

Got me thinking… What if the Midwest Pilots refuse to be trained for the E170; leaving a majority of Midwest routes being flown by Republic.

At that point… Could Republic Lease a handful or more 717’s from Boeing (that just happen to be painted in Midwest colors – with Midwest leather seats – and ovens for cookies); and then Midwest return the rest of their 717s to Boeing and contracts with Republic to fly all the Midwest routes….

I know that would not go over at all with the current Midwest Pilots Union. But they would be permanently out of the picture at that point. In the end from a big picture standpoint, you are worth what your replacements are willing to be paid.

It does present a method for TPG to lower their cost of operations and remain competitive in the market. It may even offer them the chance to grow their 717 routes again.

Perhaps latter – Midwest and Republic Merge or something….

What county did you see the billboard in? People from Sheboygan and maybe Manitowoc County think nothing of driving to MKE for a flight.

I live north of Manitowoc.

The Billboard was in the Milwaukee area: I was driving south on 43. It is an electronic Billboard alternating messages. My memory says about 1/2 the distance from Brown Deer Rd to Downtown (94). That would put it about at Glendale or Shorewood.

I can't imagine anyone as intelligent as Donald Driver routinely driving to Milwaukee to catch a flight.

I myself drive to Milwaukee for at least 1/2 of my flights. But I am also at least 45 minutes closer than Green Bay (i.e 45 minutes to GB, 1.5 Hours to Milwaukee). The other half I go to Green Bay. In my case the Milwaukee Airport is an extra 45 minutes. If I lived even on the south east edge of Green Bay - Milwaukee would be at least an extra 2 hours.

If I lived in Green bay I'm sure that driving to Milwaukee for a flight would be a rarity between the Green Bay and Appleton airports.

People who live in Sheboygan are probably equal time distance from GRB and the Milwaukee airport. It makes no sense for them to normally go to Green Bay.

Airline tickets tend to be cheaper from Milwaukee as well (For example: Green Bay to Seattle on NW is almost always more expensive than Milwaukee to Seattle on NW - even though you are on the same plane between Minneapolis and Seattle).

I always look at both schedule and price options for both Green Bay and Milwaukee. I have once flow from Appleton to Portland.

Just because he is a Packer doesn't mean the ad was aimed at Green Bay folks. The ad agency probably just chose a person most in the whole of Wisconsin would recognize and whatnot. At least that is my take on this.

I don't think Republic's other contracts (US, DL, UA, etc.) would allow them to fly something as large as a 717 for another company.

I have a feeling Midwest will find a way to get the E170 on-certificate and pilots trained for it ... those pilots who don't want the pay cut don't have to work for the company, there are plenty of pilots out there looking for a job.

I still think that the E-170 certification will pave the way for a future involving the E-190/195 family. I don't know if the 717s will remain, come back, or disappear altogether ... but I do believe the E-jets will play a large role in Midwest's reorganization.

Doesn't Midwest own the rest of the planes or at least have them financed and the others were returned when their leases expired?

If this is the case, they cannot just return them except through sale, bankruptcy or repossession.

I live about 30 minutes southwest of MSN but have used MKE instead multiple times thanks to lower fares, better times or if someone else was deciding, non-stop service (being an A.netter obviously means I personally like more connections when possible). Also, Donald Driver is a significant star anywhere in Wisconsin (and beyond that as well), so I think he is a reasonable "celebrity face" for FL to use in ads-especially around here. He is a big leader on the Packers now that you-know-who is gone.

I do sincerely hope that Midwest can get through this difficult time and survive.

I had never thought of that, that is a good point.

I believe all of them are leased ... including the nine remaining.

In many cities where FL serves; they'll have billboards sporting a NFL player from the nearest team promoting the airline. In the Philly area, FL still has Eagles QB Donovan McNabb on its billboards despite the fact that the airline dropped all but 2 nonstop destinations (ATL and MCO) out of PHL this past year.

Well there's still a large amount of Packer fans living in the Milwaukee area, that's why they have like 4 of those "Milwaukee" games up there at Lambeau.

I think I might have actually seen one of these on the I94 exit to MKE, I could be wrong though...

Will you watch the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions on Sunday? Only if coach Eric Mangini resigned after a loss.

Their are radio ads also involving Donald Driver. Most of the ads are actually aimed at us Milwaukee folks, because down here, we still ain't Bears fans. Thank god. Its almost shocking you guys are suprised by them using Donald when he is one of the top 3 faces in Wisconsin (Driver, Braun, Sabathia) right now and getting a lot of promotional deals. They are launching an all out attack on Midwest and their being, and the best way to do it is with a "local" star. You'd be suprised what Packers do.... just watch a Bucks home game any night (except nights right before a Packers game or nights of a Packers game), and I'm sure you'll see Packers players in the crowd.

As a GRB based individual, it is important to note that the Packers are a statewide favorite, and a portion of the season tickets are reserved for people that live in MKE. It was not too long ago that some games used to be played in the Milwaukee area.

Exactly... and remember this IS a Pro Athlete we are talking about. Its not so much as he ever flys them, as it is they came to him and said "here's the money", and he said okay. He was born in Houston, TX (which is served by AirTran, BTW).
