Domestic Flights In Argentina - Questions

I recently puchased tickets for a few domestic flights in Argentina... I'll be flying Buenos Aires (AEP) - El Calafate, with an en route stop in Trelew. On the return trip I stop in Ushuaia before making the long haul back north to AEP.

Both flights are operated on MD80s, although the trip down is Aerolineas Argentinas and the flight up is with Austral. Is there any difference in service between the two airlines?

Is any sort of meal service provided on AR domestic flights?

During the stops in TRW and USH, are passengers allowed off the aircraft, or is the stop too short? The itinerary I received from AR just lists "1 stop" for both flights and doesn't say how long we'll be on the ground in each place.

How early should I arrive at AEP for a 5:40am flight? I'm staying nearby in Recoleta, but I don't want to show up too early.

I'm hoping a few Argentine a.netters can provide some feedback. Thanks in advance!

I'm not Argentine, but about three years ago I flew AEP-Posadas and Iguazu-AEP. Both flights were on 737-200s, but they has "Austral" painted on one side and "Aerolineas Argentinas" on the other. While I can't speak for the MD80s, the 732 to Posadas was showing its age and had an old interior, while the 732 on the way back appeared to be newly refurbished with a brighter interior, new seats, etc.

The 6:00 a.m. flight to Posadas ran on time, and in coach, if I remember correctly, passengers were served a croissant and a choice of orange juice or water. Posadas was the "stopover" destination for that flight before it continued on, but I don't remember travelers who were continuing to the end destination leaving the plane; I believe the time on the ground in Posadas was short.

On the return, a ~10:00 a.m. turned into a ~2:00 p.m. departure because of a mechanical diversion of the inbound aircraft; while overhead announcements were garbled, a representative went to each passenger individually to inform them of the delay. On this flight passengers were served a ham-and-cheese sandwich (I didn't try it) and a small packaged tart. Flight crew was very friendly.

Overall, I thought it was good experience, though again it was several years ago. Hope this is helpful in answering at least some of your questions.  Smile

Pilot: "Request push, which way should we face?" JFK Ground: "You better face the front, sir, or you'll scare the pax!"

This is sad. Back in 1998 I was served a cheese and a meat empañada on Austral.
