Thought it would be good to have another Star Alliance thread where we can post and discuss all Star news and member news.

Here are a few recent developments. Feel free to add more.

With the theme - "You’ve earned it”, Star Alliance launched its new multi-platform brand campaign on Monday, October 20th. The campaign is aimed at increasing awareness and familiarity of the Alliance customer benefits, with a special emphasis on the value of global recognition for the frequent International traveller.

----------------
Star Alliance has won the Best Airline Alliance Award from Business Traveller (UK), for the third consecutive year.

---------------

TAP is adding a second flight per week to oil rich country and destination of São Tomé. Flights will depart Lisbon every Tuesday & Thursday with the return legs every Wednesday and Friday. The increase is due to business and VFR traffic demand between Europe and the tiny Republic off the coast of West Africa.

---------------
From January 2009, TAP Portugal will increase its presence with its intra-European flight network with the introduction of two new flights between Lisbon and Oslo. TAP has seen a double digit growth of customers between the two cities with demand for increased cargo and spoiling cargo between the two countries.

---------------
Austrian has introduced services to Riyadh and Jeddah with excellent London connections.

Flights to Riyadh - three times a week
Flights to Jeddah - four times a week

--------------
SAS will fly between Heathrow, Birmingham and Manchester to Delhi via Copenhagen three times a week, providing business and leisure travellers a fast and convenient route to one of the most dynamic economic and cultural centres in the world.

The new service will depart on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays and will offer three service classes: Business and Economy plus Economy Extra (Their premium Economy Class).

-------------
Air China is to announce the introduction of the Airbus A330 for the winter schedule on the Heathrow - Beijing route with effect from 26 October.

-------------

Air New Zealand is to switch its current Boeing 777-200 operations on the London-Los Angeles-Auckland daily services (NZ1 and NZ2) back to a Boeing 747-400 service effective from 29 March 2009.

--------------
Next to Web Check-in, Air Canada now offers passengers the flexibility of using their mobile device to check-in. Simply visit mobile.aircanada.com and select the Check-in option. Electronic Boarding Passes (EBP) can be sent directly to your mobile device by SMS text message or email for flights within Canada and all transborder and international flights originating in Canada.

It is nice to see the Star Alliance network grow however iti s important to position this alliance in long term as the most successfull one regarding, passenger numbers etc which they have achieved alread now however also regarding quality. It should be the best network on earth having the safest and most successfull airlines in this network. Hence it is somethimes better to have qualitative expansions which might be a bit slower and choosing more premium airlines oposed to a quantitative exapnsion. In my eyes the ideal Star Alliance network would see the following airlines which of course isn't possible as various of the listed airlines are laready members of other major Airline Networks:

Lufthansa
SWISS
Austrian Airlines
Air Canada
BMI
LOT
Singapore Airlines
Cathay Pacific / Dragonair
ANA
Qantas
Asiana Airlines
TAP Air Portugal
Continental Airlines
United Airlines
Iberia
Scandinavian Airlines
Turkish Airlines
South African Airways
TAM
Air New Zeland
Jet Aiways

is there any possibility UA will deploy 757s from secondary destinations like BDL, PIT, CMH to FRA and/or send them from IAD/ORD to UK secondary cities (DUB, SNN, MAN, GLA). Why is the TATL 757 such a good thing for DL, US, and AA but not UA?

UA has chosen to have their 757-200s paper de-rated to a 240k MTOW instead of the maximum capable 255k. This limits their long-range capabilities. As far as I know, the longest routes UA has ever used them on are like DEN-LIH at about 3,300sm (though I'm not sure they face the same level of winds TATL flights do).

UA uses the 757s to all variety of secondary city sizes but I doubt we'll see it crossing hte pond.

NZ is changing the way you fly with its new check-in and gate boarding for domestic flights. NZ have ads on a.net advertising it.

Agree. Ethiopian joining Star is overdue. Strongest network in Africa, by far.

Star needs a link between Europe and East Africa - right now options are limited. Yes, EgyptAir is in Star, but Star needs links to more stations in East Africa.

Doesn't Air India qualify?  Smile I'm pretty sure they are joining in 2009. They're even establishing a European hub in MUC as we "speak".

So confirmed for *A in 2009 so far are

Air India (AI)
TAM (JJ)
Continental (CO)

...any others?
TACA (TA)
Ethiopian (ET)

Other questions...
Will Copa (CM) follow Continental (CO) into *A?
Is *A looking for a Middle Eastern partner- possibly Qatar (QR) or Etihad (EY)?

Well, (as I already posted in another thread) when TAM was officially announced as a future member Jaan ALbrecht (CEO of Star Alliance) told ATW that Star was currently looking at/in talks with TACA, COPA and AVIANCA with an announcement expected in 2009. So I guess we'll see quite soon. I'd personally love to see TA and AV as future members...

Earlier this year (I think it was june or july) Mr.Tewolde Gerbremariam COO of Ethiopian was interviewed by German aviation magazine Aero International. In that interview he said, that he believed ET would be ready to join Star Alliance in 3-5 years. So it seams they are working on that. Hope it will be rather 3 than 5 years though.

I've always thought that Aviance was a better fit for oneWorld and have always hoped that AV would join oneWorld one day. I gues AV could relaly fit in with any alliance at this stage.
What do you guys think?

I posted in the other thread that if CO joins to Star Alliance, it does not necessarily means that CM will enter automatically to the mentioned group, taking into account that CO sold the shares of CM in May.
TA is sustaining a strong code-share deal with UA and LH-TA signed a memorandum of understanding in 2007.
Moreover, TA and AV are working closer lately. I envisage that the solution is around the TA-AV equation.

When will CO officially start * flights?

If someone booked a USA domestic now and CO worked better for late next year, would that pax get a CO flight number?

I would guess not.....CO hasn't made any announcement yet about when they will withdraw from skyteam, put the code share with UA into effect, or when the plan to enter *A.

My best memory guess, I thought I read somewhere, was Q4 2009, but of course, nothing is final until a day is announced.

If you were planning a trip next year, *A would not yet show CO. You could take a risk, and reserve a paid CO ticket, but no telling if you'd get *A credit or no.

What about CM's FF plan? I don't think CO is going to let CM continue to use OnePass when they make their transition to *. The only airlines that have such tight intergration between their FF plans would be AF/KL and LH(and all the airlines that they own) and soon to be DL/NW.

Every carrier in OneWorld maintains their own FF program and it doesn't look like that will be changing anytime in the future.

So the question is, would CM be willing to spend the money to develop and start its own FF program, or "maintain" the one they have now and move to *.

Also, CM is only an associate member. What are SkyTeam's rules about a full member leaving and the associate member they sponsored staying?

Always wonderers if this "last and final boarding call" is in fact THE last and final boarding call.
