I noticed today on November 30, there is a DL 77L flying to DEN as 9735. Why is this on this route? The flight number would mean a charter or something but its possible to buy tickets. Maybe I'm just missing something obvious. Is it crew training?

It looks like it's a scheduled "extra section" but it makes me wonder why it's a 77L.

possibly positioning aircraft for charter duty and selling seats instead of sending it empty as it is going on a hub to spoke routing.

Doesn't look like a charter. It's returning to ATL as DL9734 on 11/30. Possibly they had a large ski group coming and going. The fact that it's Thanksgiving weekend makes it more possible.

Arrives from BOM does a ATL-DEN RT and carries over 250 psgrs each way and arrives in ATL in time to go back to BOM.

Hopefully we'll see the 77L on more routes domestically like this since it has so much down time in ATL. I think around 10-12 hrs ground time.

I can only wonder where they're even going to park it at DIA. I believe C-46, which they gave up, was their only widebody capable gate

Why are people so against low yields?! If lower yields means more people can travel abroad, i'm all for it

Maybe I'm not up on the latest DL gates, but not too long ago DL was flying L1011s and 767s daily to DEN. I know the 777 has a larger wingspan, but aren't most, if not all of their DIA gates large enough in wing space to accomadate the 777 if need be?

Nice to see a break in the norm...

BTW, ski season has not started yet.

Well, I know that in SLC, ski season usually officially starts during Thanksgiving, and this flight is scheduled for November 30, Thanksgiving weekend. When does your ski season start?

I couldn't help but notice that is shows the equipment as the 77L, but has the seating configuration of the 777-200ER.

IIRC, Delta's 777-200LR that are operational have seating configuration of 43C/238Y. With the 777-200ER having a seating configuration of 50C/218Y.

Interesting to see which 777 they intend to operate, the 77L make more sense because it does have a lot of time before it returns to BOM. Not sure if a 777ER iis available to make this RT.

It would be a good idea, in my opinion if DL would sent the 777LR on domestic routes instead of just letting it sit there all day long waiting to return to BOM.

The obvious problem is that if is goes tech away from ATL, gets caught in a ground stop or having to divert during one of ATL summer thunderstorms it would then delay the ATL-BOM Flight.

I know LAX could use some serious up gauging in lift to LAX from ATL. I am sure that JFK, BOS, DCA, MCO, FLL, DFW, TPA would enjoy having 777 service once and awhile.

Best quote I have heard from an airline operations guy "aircraft don't make the company money sitting on the ground"
.

Also, on 29Nov, another international aircraft (767-300ER) appears in the schedule:
0749 ATL-DEN 29NOV 135P 29NOV 252P DELTA 767

As for 30Nov, the 77L has been removed from the schedule. It was, however, replaced with a 777-200ER:
9735 ATL-DEN 30NOV 1035A 30NOV 1157A DELTA 777

MSP, DTW?

For one, Atlanta to DTW or MSP can't support a daily 777 in addition to the current schedule and mix of equipment. Talk about overkill...

A 764 can fit on most gates that can take a 767.

I hope people aren't going to be disappointed, the snow sucks right now.

I bet it is just a beef up for Thanksgiving traffic, ski resorts may open this weekend, but not really peak season.

Not between those routes, but MSP-DTW if they switched has seen 744's. Obviously though DL wouldn't send a 777, it would be NW with their aircraft.

I will add point two.. Detroit and Minneapolis are not resort destinations

"Some People Just Know How To Fly"- Best slogan ever, RIP NW 1926-2009
25 Flynavy : Last L-1011 flight was in 2001.
26 Mayor : As long as the gate has room for the extra wingspan, yes. At SLC the -400 was parked at D-2 at an angle so the right wing wouldn't overhang the roadw
27 Aviationbuff08 : I'll place bets that is will be ship 7002, a DL 777-200ER. Thought maybe we'll see an 777-200LR since they are both sitting on the ground in ATL since
28 Phatfarmlines : ???? What "serious" upgauging would occur? All flights to 777s? Most of the flights are already 767s, also one of only two domestic markets that have
29 Flynavy : N861DA (ship 7002), a Boeing 777-232ER, is slotted for Delta 9735 ATL-DEN on 30Nov. Operations to Mumbai resume tomorrow, 30Nov. N701DN (ship 7101) w
30 Davescj : Good for DL! As a bonus, it also shows off DLs new BE seats, which can only be a postive thing for them. How about a NW gate? Yes, sitting aircraft d
31 ASEFlyer : I flew in last night on a DL skywest flight from SLC. The rampers seemed really stoked about the swaps and that everyone was going to be working Sunda
