I just found out today that Boeing is designing a new 747! Its the B747-400ER right? Anyways, how much farther can it fly than the B744? If its like a few hundred (200-500) miles, why does there need to be a Longer Range 747? Isn't the current (1988) version just as good???

When is the 747-400LR going to come out. They should make it the 747-500. It will be easier to tell the difference, the airlines will still list the LR as a 747-400, at least if they say a 747-500 people will know what they are flying on.

The B 747-400LR looks exactly the same as the B 747-400. Therefore it is better to keep it as B 747-400LR. The B 747X should be named B 747-500 while B 747X Stretch should be called B 747-600. The future NLA could be named 700......... If they are going to build it.

The problem with the B747-500 and -600 designations is that Boeing already used these a few years ago (which were cancelled due to "the lack of need"... well, we now know better!). At last, they re-emerged this market.
