Hi all
Sitting in my hotel the Samford Plaza next to Sydney airport this morning, I saw a QF A380 depart at around 9.00am , what was this a positionong flight or a new QF bird ?I also saw it yesterday in the maint' hangers at the back of the domestic terminals. it looked great on take off, and did manage to get some pix's but they are not that good due to being taken through the hotel window.
cheers

The aircraft would of arrived the evening before from LAX and spent the night in hangar 96... The departure you witnessed this morning would of been Nancy repositioning to MEL to form the QF93 to LAX...

Hope this clears it up...
So it has to do this repositioning flight a LOT, I would imagine, since it covers both LAX/SYD AND LAX/MEL flights?
This procedure sounds rather expensive, if it's on an ongoing basis. Are the repositioning fights also revenue flights? If so, I imagine the load factors would be kind of low. I'm surprised Qantas doesn't concentrate on just one American city until it receives more 380s, considering how strapped for cash airlines are these days...

The repositioning flight is usually only once a week.
The revenue flights are MEL-LAX-MEL on Mondays
MEL-LAX-SYD on Wednesdays (or a MEL-SYD reposition if there is some problem)
and SYD-LAX-SYD on Fridays.
I suspect the Sunday reposition flight is also a training flight, and the need for repositioning will cease when their 2nd A388 arrives.

QF not like other carriers is pretty conservative with its fleet and considering only 1 A380 has been delivered the carrier is easing the new type into the fleet to ensure a smooth transition... Just to top it off, the repositioning flights act as a training flight to maximise the crew hours with the aircraft type...

Once the 2nd and 3rd aircraft arrive towards the end of the year these flights will become less common unless an aircraft goes U/S in either MEL or SYD...

Is the SYD-LAX-JFK going to have the A380 servicing it or will it always stay 747. I just wanted know because I would LOVE to see the A380 in Qantas colors. Thanks

There are no plans at present for the 380 to perform the JFK tag on at this point.

How is that route? Loads pretty seasonal or do they got good loads going on all thru the year.

Last time I heard it does ok with premium pax, economy is more or less empty. But it hauls a lot of freight between LAX and JFK.
Beat me to it... hehe... Yeah, y/c loads are pretty light however QF make up for it with belly freight...
