Everyone always asks "when will they build a new airport for Atlanta?"

The airport opens friday!... only its not a commercial airport  Wink

Located between Dallas, and Rockmart, the concrete runway is 5,500 x 100 ft with a full taxiway and ILS system im progress, the airport will open with the runway and apron area this friday. an FBO terminal building has not been constructed yet.

while it wont be a PDK, FTY or RYY, It will be similar in nature to LZU and FFC once fully functioning.

There will be a public ceremony from 3-7p this friday with a static display, small airshow and fireworks.

So is that in Paulding Co? Who is operating it and what is the name, and three letter ID? Do you know who is running the FBO?

Yes its in Paulding county, owned and operated by the county.

The 3 letter ID will be "PUJ" which is interesting because thats the IATA code for Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, but thats what the FAA wanted

I'll have to check on the FBO, I know they issued an RFP, but not sure if it was awarded yet. The general aviation terminal building has not been completed yet. I haven't been out to the site in almost a year, so friday will be my first time seeing it again since then.

One thing to note about this new airport. Guess who they bought the land from to build this airport? The City of Atlanta. The City of Atlanta has about a 10,000 acre parcel (Paulding Forest) in the county that is a possible site of a second Atlanta airport. But unlike the Dawson Forest parcel up in Dawson County, there's probably a decent chance that it could be expanded to the extent that it really could be a second commercial airfield.

The most likely scenario is that PUJ is the FAA LID as well as the ICAO code for the airport, and if the airport does get an IATA code, it will definitely be a different code. An example of this is Tunica Municipal Airport in Mississippi. The FAA LID for the field is UTA, the IATA code is UTM, and the ICAO code is KUTA.

That has not been a consideration or even a development concept in the planning or construction process. Only a small runway extension is shown for the airfield expansion. A business/industrial park is planned for adjacent to the airport.

The new airport is about 10 miles from my house. If I get back from the doctor in time I may go Friday and take a few pictures.

I was wondering about that field - the approach into ATL from MSP has taken me by that airport every week for the last 5-6 weeks and I was curious as to what was going on.

Then again, Mesaba will eat up any chance ASA has of operating inside the state of Georgia.. so look for SAAB 340 service shortly into the new year.. *sigh*
