Overhaul or heavy mx check would be my guess if you havent seen her for a while. Try SR Technic in ZRH - i think they do VS' heavy checks.

What do you mean you dont have any bourbon? Do you know how far it is to Houston? What kind of airline is this???

She was one of the earlier A346s IIRC so perhaps it is time for her first D Check.

They are about every 35,000 hours so maybe she is due her first? Usually takes about five or six weeks for one of the big buses, right?

Believe it or not, as recently as the 1950s there were a few such occurances on overwater commercial airline flights. As one example, in 1957 a Pan Am Stratocruiser "vanished from the radar" between SFO and HNL and was not found until small amounts of wreckage and a few bodies were spotted from the air by U.S. Navy aircraft 5 days later. A decade or two earlier, a Pan Am flying boat "disappeared without a trace" over the Pacific Ocean and was never found.

Also in 1957, a TWA L-1649 Starliner went AWOL from the airline for 6 months when it was commandeered by TWA owner Howard Hughes for his personal usage for an extended Bahamas vacation.

I don't think so but VS fleet policy is somewhat random so they may lease out the A346s and then go and buy some 767s cos they're short of capacity.....

Wow its a long way from home! Why send the aircraft all the way out here! Surley if they could send it just to FRA or a closer LH technik place!

Also AWOL normally means Away With-Out Leave or AWOL.

Not that far when the plane does a scheduled LHR-HKG,

then the ferry: HKG-MNL and back MNL-HKG,

finally doing another scheduled:

HKG-LHR

(HKG-MNL is only around 720nm so around 1h:30m flight)

Tango Bravo,

There is no 'Radar' coverage between SFO and HNL .

OK yes that would work. but then what about the return flight? i mean do they just have another flight on that day to HKG and no return?
If they have to fly another aircraft out for the return segment cause then thats expensive also.

I stand corrected. The said aircraft (in reply 9) went missing when the crew failed to give a scheduled position report to a Coast Guard ship tracking the the flight's progress, after which the flight was never heard from again. Thirty-six pax and 8 crew members perished following an apparent ditching; only 19 bodies were ever recovered.

25 Brenintw : I would imagine it's something like this: Aircraft #1 is in heavy maintenance, and is ready to leave on "Monday." Sunday night, aircraft #2 flies LHR
26 Rutankrd : Well thanks for all the comments. AWOL - "Absent without leave" So we know its in Manila - any ideal when its due back in service ?
27 Leezyjet : Although on some occasions it doesn't always work out so the a/c may have to ferry directly from/to LHR.
28 CptSpeaking : Eh, technically, I suppose, however when the time comes to return and they're still absent, it becomes appropriate
29 Flyingfox27 : G-VFOX arrived early last Saturday morning (22nd November 2008) I wish i got her on camera as she is now in new colours. So dont worry folks FOXy is s
30 Leezyjet : Are you sure about that ?. Looked like the "old" colours when I saw it the other day but it was dark.
31 SevenHeavy : Its definately still in the old colours.
