What does this mean to AA third flight to BOG? Can you put me up to date with the situation. Great news for Spirit and Medellin

It seems like the business model of NK in Colombia has been quite sucessful, taking into account their established destinations in Bogota and Cartagena de Indias.

I think it is going to be daily.

Well, AA will have to use frequencies that it currently uses on it second daily MDE for their 3rd daily to BOG.
Load factors have not been great for MIA-MDE in the low season, at only 51% for September down from 77% in August, and over 80% in July.
I would imagine AA might move some, if not a whole 7 frequencies from MDE to BOG (maybe even changing MDE to 757 from 737 in the process).
We shall have to see what does actually happen.

This award to Spirit is good news for competition, good news for MDE and for the fostering of business between this thriving region of Colombia and the US.

As a side note, it's clear in the order issued by DOT in its award to Spirit, that the US and Colombia have an extra-bilateral agreement that allows US airlines to serve Armenia (AXM) and San Andres Island (ADZ) with unlimited scheduled flights.

It is Spirit's intention to start these 2 destinations in Spring 2009.
It would be remarkable if NK went from having no destinations in Colombia until a few months ago, to 5 by Summer 2009.

As far as I know, San Andres Island is being regulated upon the Open Skies agreement.

The open skies only covers BAQ and CTG. However, in practice it is the same as far as US carriers are concerned. The difference lies in rights for Colombian carriers to operate from open skies points to the US -not so in this ad hoc agreement for ADZ and AXM.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Santa Marta [SMR] in also included in that list.
Regards.

Santa Marta is open but for charter flights only, with the restrictions that carries. In fact, ADZ is in that category too, just that with the new extra-bilateral agreement airlines can operate there without the charter restrictions (sale at US only among others, rendering them unappealing).
