The A319 arrived at LCA on Wednesday and was presented to the press today.

The aircraft belongs to ILFC and is leased to CY for 6 years.

I carried out a quick search and it appears that the plane used to fly with Spirit Airways before joining the CY fleet.

The aircraft is named "Larnaka" as a tribute to the town where CY had to base their planes since 1974 when Nicosia Airport closed.

I´m glad to see that CY have named an aircraft after their hub city. I love Larnaca and hope to revisit shortly.

It is expected to be followed by 1-2 additional A32X aircraft, possibly A320.

When asked the CY Chairman although he did not reveal the monthly rental, he said that due to the current economic downturn the company managed to lease the A319 at a very good price "almost half of what it would be if the deal was done last year".

He also mentioned that the company is also looking to replace another 2 A320 however they are still negotiating with the lessors and any decision will take into account the current economic crisis.

Reading through the lines I believe that they will negotiate and only if given a good price will go ahead with new leases. Rumours mention the possibility of leasing 2 A321s to be used on popular destinations like ATH, AMS and MAN.

I am hoping for the A321 rumours to become true. 2 A321, 3 A319, 4 A320 and 2 A330 should give CY the flexibility to change aircraft depending on loads (except the A330s which will always operate mainly to LHR and CDG). The ATH route really needs a bigger plane. A3 do use their A321s sometimes and CY send A330s during the winter.

SALAMIS.

This was actually one of the ex CY A310 names so I would not be surprised if it comes back.
