This week AV will be 89 years old..
5 December 1919
A Colombian airline, Aerovias Nacoinales de Colombia SA (Avianca) is formed. By 1982 it will have achieved the longest continuous record of scheduled services.
The airline traces its history back to December 5 1919, in the city of Barranquilla, Colombia. Germans and Colombians founded the Colombo-German Company. The company accomplished its first flight between Barranquilla and the nearby town of Puerto Colombia, aboard a Junkers F.13, wherein 57 pieces of mail were transported; the flight was piloted by German Helmuth Von Krohn. This and another aircraft of the same type were completely mechanically constructed monoplanes, the engines of which had to be modified in order to be able to efficiently operate in the climatic conditions of the country; there were nine aircraft in the fleet with a total range of 850 km (525 Mi) and could carry up to four passengers and two crewmen. Due to the topographic characteristics of the country and the lack of airports at the time, two seaplanes were adapted to the Junkers aircraft, in order for them to accomplish water landings in the rivers of different towns. Using these floats, Helmuth Von Krohn was able to perform the first inland flight over Colombia on October 20 1920, following the course of the Magdalena River; the flight took eight hours and had to make four emergency landings in the water.

Just a bit out of topic, but I just happened to receive as a gift a paper ticket issued by SCADTA. I was pretty happy to get it, since it belonged as to a relative, and to me, it is nothing more than a personal a family piece of valuable memorabilia.
When I get my scanner working I'll post it.
Cheers

Happy Birthday Avianca!
Do some of you know how many airbus planes is expected to be delivered in 2009?
And how is it going in the process of building the new international terminal in Bogota? I could imagine that Avianca will demand more space at Eldorado for its fleet as more and more new planes are being added to the fleet.
Happy 89 wonderful years of great achievements !!! ...
Ricardo, Colombian friends, can someone tell us when did Avianca exactly started flying to Mexico City... Was the " Connie " the first aircraft from AV to land in Aztec land ?
... Mexico and Colombia go back quite sometime already thanks to the links provided by the great condor airline...
I recall very well seeing those beautiful " Ruana Roja " flight attendants, stepping out from AV´s 720s and 707s at MEX in the early sixties... Oh, those very wonderful and glamorous days !!!
Best regards
No matter how you fly...just never get your wings clipped !

I feel so proud of our Airline; for what it has represented for our Country in the past years and for what is going to represent in the upcoming years, not only for Colombia, but for Latin America.
I want to share some information that some of you Colombians might remember, taken from various AV's magazines:
Celebrating Company's 75th birthday, back in 1994.
Once again, Avianca flies to London, this time, to Heathrow. It was offered, initially, twice a week on Boeing 767-200ER aircraft (N988AN was leased to be able to operate the route). Year 1997.
This was the international network the Company had by the ends of the 1990's. Since then, scheduled services to destinations such as SJU, CUN, FRA, CDG, LHR and GIG are not flown by the Airline.
Domestic routes map (1999). By that time, SAM used to operate a fleet of Cessna Caravan, which were used to fly to from CLO, PPN, BUN, UIB, NQI, BHS, EOH, CTG, VUP, RCH, PVA, MTR, CPG, etc.
During Colombia's economy crisis, by 2000, international destinations were reduced.

For work purposes, I flew today BOG-SMR-BOG. The construction of the new international cargo terminal is on the way and going really fast. They are doing some jobs on the adyacent roads, so the traffic is really a mess (well, at least today). Also, I saw that they are building something in front of the B concourse, between taxiways 'G' and 'F'. Taxiway 'G' is closed.

Wow, thanks for posting these... Some I remember, some I had never seen before. Interesting that the 2-page "80th Anniversary" poster did not mention the B720/B707 introduced in the early 60's (yes, I'm biased!).

28 RICARIZA: Is it true that mid January, AV will suspend the A330 to MIA? If so, why?
29 AV757: By the end of January all of the A330-243 flight crews will have finished their check rides, including me now as an A330 captain. By then we will have
