greetings
I was flying on US San-PHX-TPA and i noticed a 747SP on the other side of the UA/CO terminal. It was just sitting there. it was white and looked like a maroon stripe and a circular shape on the tail. i wish i had my camera to take a pic of it. Anybody know why it was there, who owns it, and where it was going?

Not sure who owns it but I saw it when I stopped over in PHX in November 21 and saw it there as well (I wondered who it was myself).
BTW, I also saw a NW 747 (-200? F? definitely not a -400) in San Diego (SAN) that weekend and wondered what it was doing there.
Read this very carefully, I shall write this only once!

I think you saw the Sands or one of the LAS hotels aircraft. It also could have been the Saudi plane that visits the US pretty often.

Well, I can assure you it wasn't P4-FSH. That 747SP is parked for the winter at MQY and won't return to the skies until Feb or late, late Jan.
In case you were wondering, it's the Reverand Ernest Angley's gorgeous ride. The one parked at PHX is perhaps the Sands "-SP" because I remember seeing a picture of it there recently I believe.

Quoting FLY2HMO (Reply 5): Wasn't there one parked there for a long time, and that AFAIK is still there, from the royal Qatari family?
I think it is the same one, was originally parked over near the executive terminal but moved to the cargo area a few weeks ago. Must have been at PHX for at least a couple of months now.

Yes it's the same 747SP you are referring to. The royal family of Qatar is in PHX staying at the Phoenician resort while a member of the family is receiving treatment at the the world renowned Mayo clinic.
It has been here for quite some time and no one knows for sure how long it will be here.

Quoting Pyrex (Reply 9): Is it a regular visitor? Cargo or PAX?
NW occasionaly brings in the 747 pax version for various reasons but they are few and far between. PHX also will see the occasional Japan Airlines 747 for sport charters. Crazy as it may sound it does happen every now and then.

Quoting Pyrex (Reply 9): Yes. I saw it land in on the 22nd (saturday) and when I flew out of SAN, on the 23rd, it was still there. Is it a regular visitor? Cargo or PAX?

Quoting Lexy (Reply 11): It was there for US a military charter I believe.
The NW 747-200 on 11/23 and 11/24 brought the Indianapolis Colts to town to play the Chargers. It was the second NW 742 in three weeks as another one brought the Chargers back from their game in London a few weeks ago.

Quoting Lexy (Reply 12): Thanks to the spell check being broke, what I meant to say is that it is a military charter for the US military. Pax config too.
It seemed like a -200. Didn't know they still operated it. How many do they have, any idea?

The 747 that was in SAN on the 22nd was the Northwest flight that brought the Indianapolis Colts to San Diego for a football game against the Chargers.
I believe there was a thread here regarding it's arrival.

NW still has two 747-200s doing charter work, N623US (in the old colors) and N624US (in the new colors).

AIRLINERS.NET CREW PHOTO SCREENER
Quoting FLY2HMO (Reply 8):
Tried to find pictures of it, I know I've seen them here, but of course the one time I need it the damned photo search isn't working. Yeah sure
Seems to be working fine. That search engine on the top right corner of each page can be quite useful, actually. One search and found the aircraft, VP-BAT:
But where's the photo? Oh yeah! The forums won't let me post the photo. When I plugged the photo in, and clicked "post message," I kept getting a blank page.

Nice to more B747s in PHX. Caught it while taking off on 07L a few days ago.
By the way, do the BA B744s come in after dusk now?

It has been parked in PHX since sometime in August. It is in a bad spot to get any clear photos though.

Quoting FLY2HMO (Reply 19): That's not the plane. It's white with green and has a slightly different tail logo IIRC.
Well, to me it looks maroon and white and has the same tail logo as VP-BAT, and unless there's another aircraft identical to it, it's definitely VP-BAT. Or perhaps there's just something seriously wrong with my eyes.
Here's the photo I took of it while taking off from 07L. Too bad my telephoto lens was up in the overhead bins.

I'm starting to think they might have another one brought up to PHX. But I can't find the damned picture with the useless search!!!
They might have a slightly different one that's been sitting there for quite a while too but it might be gone now and they sent in the one in your picture. I showed my roommate your picture, he was in PHX recently and I know for a fact he saw the same SP I did. I showed him the picture of your SP above and he too says that's not the one we saw. The tail logo as far as we can tell is the same but the reg and colors are different.
There was a thread on these SPs earlier and I think I posted a picture of it in that one... I'll try and find it.

VP-BAT has been sitting at Sky Harbor for quite some time now as I have been driving past it five days a week on my way to work for at least a month or two now.
Other interesting aircraft recently seen sitting at Sky Harbor have been three of the Frontier A319s that were sold; N907FR and N915FR which left about a week ago and N913FR which was sitting there as of 03 Dec.
