What will happen to terminal 2, 3, 4 at LHR? Will any of them be pulled down? If yes will they rebuild it?

T2 will be pulled down once Heathrow East is up and running (hopefully by 2012), T3 is going through a major upgrade and a mayor upgrade of T4 has just been started now that BA has left it.
Our British members can elaborate more on that I would assume, and there have been topics before about this, so you can also try searching for them...

Terminal 2 will be the first to go (after the Queen's Building between T1 and T2). The first phase of Heathrow East will be built on the T2 / QB site. Once phase 1 is up and running and Star Alliance have moved in (most Star Alliance are in or due to move to T1), then T1 will be closed and the next phase of Heathrow East will be constructed. T4 has a large amount of building work going on at the moment - huge new check in area and airside lounge pavillion. T3 is also going to be refurbished and expanded.

About time as well. That terminal looks very very outdated. From the screens, the gate number signs and those Dunlop escalators... all very retro (early 1980s, but not surprised since the terminal started around that time)

T4 was opened in April 1986. The screens and gate number signs have all been replaced with LCD flat panels, and match those in T5. The 'Dunlop' escalators? I assume you mean the airside travelators? Nothing wrong with those! Have you ever bounced up and down on them? They're loads of fun!!  Big grin

T4 will be the home of SkyTeam carriers at LHR, isn't it?

Next flights: MEX-GRU (AM 77E), GRU-GIG (JJ A320), SDU-CGH (G3 73H), GRU-MEX (JJ A332).

Yes and a handful of non aligned carriers. But T4 will be a most splendid facility when the extension work is completed, its only problem is having to cross active runway half the time to get to/from stands!

What's Heathrow East?

So will they build a new terminal 2? Why are they pulling it down? It's not that old is it?

Here is an overview plan of Heathrow from BAA.

After the new terminals, where will Virgin be based?

Heathrow East will replace both T1 and T2. Don't know if they will stick with Heathrow East or rename it T1 or T2, but LHR will only have 4 terminals when HE is build.
I was a bit quick in my earlier post, indeed T2 will be demolished first, and when the first phase of HE is up and running, T1 will be demolished as well

Terminal 2 is Heathrow's oldest terminal, dating from 1955 - it used to be called the Europa Terminal (hence the predominance of European carriers at it even today). By comparison, T3 opened in 1961, T1 in 1968, T4 in 1986 and T5 this year. T2 is very cramped and congested indeed so an update is not out of order at all there.

VS will stay at T3.

I won't be sorry to see T2 flattened, or T1 come to think of it. Once Heathrow East is finished and T4 is renovated there is only the sprawling mess of T3 left to deal with, then LHR might actually be a worthy international airport. (the splendor of T5 does not offset the rest of the dump at the moment)

T1 is quite nice now actually now that BA have cleared out of there. It's very quiet and roomy now.

According to some publications, HE will be called terminal 2. Lame as that is.

Construction of the East pier of Heathrow East has already started, Demolition of T2 Euro pier (shown to the left of the new HE pier) will start as the construction of this new pier progresses. I took this pic two weeks ago.

I beat you! I saw it a week ago. Our aircraft parked on the new apron opposite it. Didn't look hugely different from your photo though.

So that's the satellite pier then? And it's not T2's europier, it's T1. Will it actually be demolished as soon as the new project expands, or will it, as other rumours suggest, be attached to the new concourse for a short while until LHR-E phase 1 is open?
