It doesn't feel like peak season here at FedEx. 12 wide-bodies will be parked this month and an additional 8 more in January. No plans to lay-off or furlough any employees. We will decline 15 options for A310 in early 2009. 12 757s in the system by end of 2008. 50 firm on the order, with additional 33 on the LOI.

Just cutting costs like all other major airlines to run a tighter ship while the storm is weathered. Independent study group has helped AGFS battle this slow time in the global economy.

Happy flying.  airplane

Hey FX Ramper I just have a quick question for you. I leave near VCV and in the last 6 months or so we have received about half a dozen or so A310's, what's the deal with that. I used to be a Team Leader at ONT and whenever we had a 310 I was always anxious about the guys running the loaders and tug and dolly so that they wouldn't hit either of the engines.

Hey Drew they have indicated that the 757 will be the go between the 727 and the A310. My understanding is that they do not want any more A310's atleast for now.

why did i think the A300/A310 production line was closed? were these aircraft being acquired from the used market? or built new?

Why are people so against low yields?! If lower yields means more people can travel abroad, i'm all for it

- The A300/310 line is closed, all the A310s operated by FedEx were used machines.

Yea, right. I'll believe it when I see it. How do you park that many airplanes without a corresponding reduction in workforce?

Hiring freeze, if someone quits you do not hire replacement.

Simple, that many junior crews go back to being reserve and make guarantee! They just understand that they will be "fat" on the crews for a while! Although I am not entirely arguing with you that they WON'T furlough! We will just have to wait and see!

That and with additional 757s coming online, wouldn't the displaced A310 crews simply train for and move to the 757?

I'd take the awe of understanding over the awe of ignorance any day.

It's already happened. To clarify, the removal of the 12 wide-bodies is just temporary. Peak isn't as strong as recent years and January is the worse month of the year for us. The "parked" a/c will be back in the system in early '09 as business picks up and others go into mx checks.

I assume that all the wide bodies are MD11's or DC10's /MD10's?

Thanks, Bruce.

I'd doubt they'd park their MD10s or MD11s, but I could be wrong...

I am guessing A300/310 ac were parked. The MD10, MD11 and Dc10 are too valuable for the system.

I am quite suprised at this announcement as I work for a very large retailer with an online site and we had a record Thanksgiving, yes you didnt read it wrong, an all time record online Thanksgiving weekend it was released on our corporate website today with figures and all those wonderful purchases need to be delivered.
Trust me if we had a record web weekend there are a huge amount of packages that need delivery. I am also sure we are not the only major retailer to have a good webtime with delivery requirements.

Making everyone become more efficient. We've been on a hiring freeze on the DGO side for a while now.

Domestic daily shipment averages are down but international is still growing at a steady pace. Picking up some of the DHL accounts should help out.

My location handles the ILN area and honestly I think we could PICK up a lot more business from DHL than we have thus far.....

Not too many of the big ones from DHL, I know that UPS has picked up a large bulk of the old DHL accounts.
