As a sign of the slow economy, cargo operator Kalitta announced furlough 200 of its approximately 830 employees and will ground 8 of its 20 aircraft.

The company has reportedly seen losses hit the ‘tens of millions’

In a letter to employees:

Quote:

“Although Kalitta Air has experienced a period of rapid growth, it is currently faced with the aftermath of unprecedented worldwide economic conditions,”

“Maintaining strong business fundamentals requires us to evaluate and adjust every facet of our operations in order to ensure that we are operating in the most efficient manner possible during these volatile times. Unfortunately, passively waiting for things to improve and not being proactive is not an option.”

“Consequently, we are forced to reduce aircraft, crews and support staff accordingly,”

Good luck to the crews and personnel who have been furloughed so close to Christmas. Do we know which aircraft will be parked?

Wow. Some of the other pilot forums were talking of parking a -100 series and maybe a couple of -200s but this is larger than expected. I'm guessing the 2 -400s will remain in service. What a tough environment. Best wishes to those affected.

Very sad news given the time of the year.

Do airlines normally give "heads-up" about job cuts weeks in advance? Or do they walk in one day and tell 200 people not to come back tomorrow or next week?

Best wishes to those affected

I am not sure about the state you live in but here in Wisconsin there is a law that requires to notify the state 45 or 60 days prior to any mass layoffs. I forget what the exact number is.

This could only be the start of massive layoffs in the airline industry. The first signs have been around with aircraft being stored and roue reductions.
Let's see what the future brings and the best of luck to the affected people of Kalitta and the company.

Zanair flight, please hold on finals as we have to clear rhino's off the runway. Next flight: AMS-FRA-AMS

Not only aircraft being stored but also airlines going bankrupt and delaying delivery of ordered new build aircraft.

So this is affecting the whole world in all shapes and sizes.

I actually wonder how the big leasing companies will fare.
Though i do not know how they get their cash reserves I can imagine that the big banks and such companies don't lend out money as they used to due to the fact that their equity balance is not what it used to be.

Connie should be able to weather the storm. He owns everything outright, except for the two -400s.

Most states do have a 60 required notice to employees of pending downsizing or lay offs, Indiana is one of those states, but I do recall my furlough notice from ATA occurred exactly 10 days afer the 09/11 attacks, and the first round had occurred with just a few days after the event.

I worked wiht Connie's organization for a number of years while I was at Bax Global, and I feel confident his organization will come out whole as the business climate starts to improve. Having been in that postion before, my thoughts and prayers are with those who are being fuloughed, particularly at this time of the year.
