Extra SAS Cut-backs On Intercon For Winter

Merry Christmas all,

According to takeoff.nu, SAS will cut their intercon programme further or January and February 2009 due to lack of demand. SAS, like many other carriers, already cuts back a bit on the winter schedule relative to the summer schedule (their programme is, still, not 100 % balanced between winter and summer routes, although it has become a lot better). However, this time they're announcing cancellations of 40 extra departures in Jan and Feb; not insignificant with only 11 a/c.

Routes affected include CPH to EWR, ORD, DEL and ARN to BJS, ORD, EWR. Pax will be transferred to other dates or to LH. Extra cut-backs to North America in winter, and with a financial crisis, might not be too alarming (although cutting back on EWR is a bit surprising IMO). But cutting back on DEL in Jan and Feb, high season here, is sure signs that this route has not at all been a success for SAS. I know from an insider that the route wasn't performing too well before the financial crisis really kicked in, and Mumbai attacks, already, so I don't think they'll return to DEL for the fall, sadly.. I was on the route a couple of weeks ago, CPH-DEL was full all over, but DEL-CPH was just packed in Y, yet only five pax in J and a few in Y+... and bear in mind, Y-pax have likely paid less than 600 Euros roundtrip..

Oh well, maybe they'll come up with an exciting new winter long-haul destination next year.. that they'll be making a solid loss on as well..  Wink

my vote goes for them trying to restart SFO

I may be overthinking, but I'm sure the cuts would also include IAD?

Very interesting read though. I wouldn't be surprised if DEL gets the axe, but it hasn't been in operation for 6 months yet. I'll wait for the summer to give my 2 cents worth of kronor or rupees on that.

That is what I also think. Didnt they plan from the beginning to start SFO and DEL together.

Sounds like DEL is doomed. What aircraft do they use on the route?

They use an A340-300

Well the reason to why they didn't start SFO, but went for DEL instead is the shorter flight time which makes it possible for them to return the aircraft to CPH , i'm not too sure about how many hours but i'm guessing on 16-18?

They reason to why they didn't start them both was because they didn't or couldn't get that 8th A343, for some reason. From what i've heard, there weren't any 2nd hand A343's on the market, which in my opinion seems like bs.

Does any of this lost long-haul flying get shifted elsewhere? or does 1 plane get parked for 2 months?

Will SAS return to Dubai anytime soon?

They're already flying to DXB. The CPH-DXB service is seasonal, operating during the winter season, and from what I've heard, it's doing pretty well.

he he yes... but still, the sex appeal of exciting long-haul destinations should not be underestimated - in history, it has more than often won against the crude, "boring" economics of it..

True, they went for DEL for that reason. They depart CPH at 6,15 p.m. IIRC and return the next day around 12.30 p.m., so around 18 hours CPH to CPH, with a little less than three hours at DEL. As for SFO, however, I doubt that they'll take that up anytime soon with financial crisis and a despressing world economy in general.

I think it's doing well, too - this is the second winter for the route, so it must have done something right last winter.

As for DEL, was it ever the plan that it should be anything but seasonal for the winter? Anyways, it's not possible to book a flight to DEL with SK from April and onwards... I think it's all over for that route, also for next winter.. sadly.. but competition is too fierce.. glad I got to try it, though!
