Lufthansa A340's At Heathrow

I was at LHR yesterday and I noticed two Lufthansa A340s plus another large Lufthansa widebody (either A330 or B777 - sorry it was too far away and rolling out quickly to see properly). So, my question is, does anybody know why LH operates these widebodies to LHR? Was this a one-off (although I saw at least three yesterday)?

You could be right about the A340s but LH does not operate the A330 or B777. It was probably an A300.

Must be a football charter or something. There was a huge Germany-Scotland (or teams thereof) match in the UK at the weekend, perhaps that's it? Although I would have thought STN a more likely London terminus for football charters. Maybe LH just upped capacity on their existing scheduled flights.

That could be true indeed though I know there are regulary intra-european flights with widebodies. I think SR has some A330 flight from Zurich to London. BA operates several B767 flights within Europe, ...

It was Scotland-Belgium in the world cup qualifier.

Do you think that maybe the flights had been diverted to LHR(For the A340s anyway)?

I think they use the widebodies for extra flights to the CeBit-computer show in Hanover / Germany. Last year for the show, I was on a 744 from FRA to HAJ [ 30 min. flight]. Hope I could help.  Smile

It's a really short range flight for an A340, but everything is possible. I wonder about the reason for an A340 to come to LHR. Normally LH would use an A300 or an A310 for this route but maybe they where short on aircrafts this day?

The A340 could have been a switch for the regular A300 flight.

You must have seen the A330 because Lufthansa does not operate the 777. They pry had the A340's their because they could have a lot of people going from LHR-FRA, mabye a ferrie flight.

I checked flt. info. in SABRE, and found that LH4637/25MAR operated with A343. It normally operates with a A320. LH had 6 flts scheduled between LHR and FRA using an A310 x1 A300x2 737x1 A320 and the A343 flt.
