What Is Going On With US Airways Diverting To ABQ?

i just tracked my friends flight PHL-LAX AWE1416 and it says it is going to ABQ I also checked AWE1417 and thats diverting to ABQ also what going on here?

Short answer: fully loaded A321 + fighting strong winter jet stream + transcon westbound = insuffecient range

good thinking my friend texted me saying they were on the ground in ABQ..and she and her family got a later flight onto LAX

I worked one of our westbound transcon desks in the last few days, and was able to use best-wind routings that took flights from BWI/PHL and New England up over MI, WI, MN and the Dakotas before coming back towards their various destinations. Flights were saving 20-30 minutes of enroute time, and roughly 2,500 lbs. of fuel by doing so....

We usually stop around the mid-point, plus or minus a couple of hundred miles. It also depends upon if we have an airport there too...
