Heard on CNN radio news:

MKE is closed

http://www.fly.faa.gov/flyfaa/usmap.jsp

Judging by that website the following have ground stops or delays in place: ORD, MDW, DTW JFK, EWR, LGA, PHL

Just say NO to scabs.

CLOSED DUE TO SNOW/SNOW REMOVAL.

Well what a freaking surprise! Today I would say is relatively bad, I had a snow day  Smile... But MKE has been bad with snow removal in the past, as I've experienced in the past. Nothing new at MKE..

My experience has been just the opposite. Usually pretty good. But, when you get 14 inches with up to 4 inches an hour coming down, I don't think Joe Patrone could even keep up with that. Being next to Lake Michigan doesn't help, either.

Sadly, this happens at least once a year at MKE while ORD just steams along. Two different philosophies, perhaps?

Drifting is the main challenge. With winds at 20 gusting to 30, it takes only a few minutes for a freshly-plowed section of runway or taxiway to become covered once again.

MKE is closer to the lake than ORD is so they get more snowfall. I work in the northern burbs near the lake but live out between ORD and RFD. There are days in the winter when it will be sunny out by me however when I get to work it is overcast and snowing due to being so close to the lake and getting the lake effect snow. Also, what did they get, 14 inches of snow or so, and up to 4 inches an hour. If something like that came through the ORD area (and I am glad that it has not yet) I am sure the same will happen there.

I just heard we have a windchill advisory and winter storm watch for Saturday Night though Sunday here at MKE. Look for more blowing and drifting snow.

Was just watching WISN-TV's 6pm news. They indicate that MKE was closed from 1200Z through 2200Z. It appears they just got ops going again. Ch 12 reports that US canceled what remaining flights were on the board for today and will reset for tomorrow. No indication on what other carriers are doing.

I live about 3/4 to 1 mile south of ENW. They're reporting 14 inches here. Started just after midnight and stopped right around noon. I work in Evanston...drive to the train station and then take the train. I decided not to risk it this morning and hunkered down at the house.

Visibility was down to less than a quarter of a mile at times here throughout the morning.

With the way they are predicting storm...after storm...after storm, I'm starting to get antsy about my MKE-MSP-CLT trip on NW next Tuesday.

I'm currently stuck in IAH as I type this. My original route was planned as CLL (College Station, TX)-IAH-EWR-FRA all on CO. However, my CLL-IAH flight was delayed over an hour (for a 20 minute flight) due to mechanical problems. So I get to IAH but miss my 1:10 PM CO50 connection to EWR.

I go to the customer service desk and for over an hour the lady is trying to find me a route to FRA on any airline that would land me home in FRA by Saturday in Germany. However all the flights are full as were almost all the flights anywhere around the country and the bad weather in ORD and the Northeast wasn't helping AT ALL! So I will have to take another flight to EWR and overnight there and take the CO50 EWR-FRA flight tommorow with arrival on Sunday.

They were nice enough to put me in first class for IAH-EWR but that flight is now delayed from 7:10 PM to around 9:30 PM. An almost 8 hour delay from what I was originally routed on.  Sad

But hey, I'll look on the bright side and be glad that I wasn't trying to get to MKE or ORD...

Chicago and Milwaukee actually don't get that much lake effect snow. NW Indiana & SW Michigan are the usual recipients for that. I think the main reason for the big snowfall disparity between ORD & MKE yesterday/today was temperature difference. If Chicago had been a little bit colder, ORD would have been in a world of hurt.

This is the scene at IAH right now as I am facing a 9 hour delay in flying to EWR as described in reply #10....

Wow! Although that doesn't surprise me.

There were a ton of folks canceled out from midwest cities to EWR both last night and today, and many of them got shuttled down to IAH to catch a ride east from there. The guy next to me en route to IAH this morning in just this situation managed to connect to BWI, from which I think he was going to catch a train.

Tough deal for the holidays,
-Mike

yeah, there seemed to have been 5-6 flights for IAH-EWR I saw yesterday. I finally got out of IAH on CO310 that was delayed itself until 11PM... Wow, that was 12 hours that i spent at IAH waiting for a new flight after getting off a 20 minute flight from CLL... I than got into EWR at 2:30 this morning and have to wait until CO50 flight from EWR to FRA takes off later this afternoon. by far the worst flight experience I have had in my years of flying...  Sad

P.S. As for me, my MEM-MKE connection later today is still scheduled, but weather appears that it will deteriorate rapidly around that time, so we'll see...at least I'll have the gf in tow to keep me company.  Smile
