After trying since 1990 to get an air carrier certificate, Baltia Air Lines Inc was finally rewarded this week when the DOT issued an order finding the company was is fit, willing, and able to engage in foreign scheduled air transportation and should be issued a certificate of public convenience authorizing such operations.
Per Baltia's most recent plans, it hopes to commence JFK - St. Petersburg Russia service utilizing a leased B747-300 in a 3-class 320 seat configuration with up to 5 weekly frequencies.
Now lets see how long it takes them to actualy operate a flight.

No matter if and when this venture takes off, I predict it will not be around 18 years from now.

Talk about persistence. Not sure I'd want to be starting such a venture in this environment though.
My definition of cool ? Not trying so hard to be cool.

Yes but lease rates are probly really low... leasors are probly on there kness's trying to upsell there fleets, especially older aircraft like the B747-300...
Why dont this airline opt for the B747-400 instead? Theres enough available on the market...

Are the days incorrect or do they really plan on parking an aircraft at JFK for almost a week between flights?

Yes that is their proposed initial schedule. They plan eventually to be up to 5x weekly at some point.
Remember.... it took them 18 years to get this far -- so don't hold your breath expecting too much too fast from these guys.

With the funding they have they will be lucky to get FAA certification. I wish them that luck.

Probly because 18 years ago when they filed with the DOT the 744 was still new on the market and were much more expensive to lease/own than a 743.
Doors open, right hand side, next stop is Springfield.

Back then they were proposing 747-100s.
However at the end of the day with the low relative utilization planned and ownership cost I'd still say the 747-300 would come out ahead of a 747-400s.
