Following its recently announced contract to redevelop Gulf Air's brand, aircraft interiors and uniforms, James Park Associates (JPA) has been commissioned to design the Bahraini national carrier's new premium passenger lounge at Heathrow's Terminal 4.

The lounge will occupy a site of 7,000 sq ft (650m2) and will enable travellers to enjoy the airline's hospitality within JPA's trademark combination of comfort, space and technical innovation.

Due to open in the first quarter of 2009, following Gulf Airs move from Terminal 3, the lounge will aim to offer luxurious seating.

Good for Gulf Air stuck at Terminal 3 since the beginning of the Jet Age.

I'm not sure if moving to T4 at LHR will be a smart move for GF...

A lot of their LHR traffic is connecting passengers from the US and they have an important codeshare with American Airlines. Im not sure if passengers will appreciate having to transit right across the airport to T3 to board their connecting AA flight, when previous both airlines have operated from the same terminal.

Also considering the airline only operate 2-3 flights a day from LHR, operating their own lounge seems a little extravagant. Why not use the facilities of another airline or use a contractors lounge!

Because its LHR and the most important destination for Gulf Air. They can lease the lounge to other airlines like Delta and Continental also using Terminal 4.

Delta (and CO while in ST) will be opening a new lounge (first ever joint SkyTeam lounge) at LHR in the very near future. It will be similar to what Star Alliance is doing with its lounges in T1.

Doubt that CO will be using the Gulf Lounge anytime soon since they are in SkyTeam right now and later be in Star and will use their respective lounges.

BTW, How many lounges does Heathrow have? From people's descriptions of LHR on here (I haven't personally been there) it sounds like its a mall with exclusive rest areas where occasionally a plane takes off and lands.

Always wonderers if this "last and final boarding call" is in fact THE last and final boarding call.

....and you say you've not been to LHR?  Wink

Seriously, it's a very, very busy major international airport, with only two runways. There is shopping, (and very good shopping at that), but there are also a lot of airline lounges, and other passenger facilities. The infrastructure in some areas is a little lacking, but BAA are spending tons of money at LHR right now, building brand-new passenger facilities (T5C, LHR East, T4 lounge complex etc) and improvements to the passenger experience are on their way.

It all just takes a bit of time and a lot of money!

Sounds like a bad move, as currently, GF premium pax arriving from the Gulf can use the AA Arrivals Lounge in T3. Besides, the current GF lounge in LHR is pretty good (IMHO).

I assume GF will be taking over the current BA Terraces lounge area by Gate 1C? There are currently 3 lounge facilities at LHR T4 departures - the Holideck lounge, the BA lounge by Gate 20, and the BA lounge by Gate 1C. I assume the Holideck will remain as-is, probably for the non-aligned airlines that move to T4, that SkyTeam will take over the current BA lounge by Gate 20 (that area includes the former Concorde Room, now used as the BA First lounge), and GF will use the one by Gate 1C?

The BA lounge complex in T4 opposite Gate 10 (next to Gate 20) closed when BA moved their last batch of flights to T5 on October 22nd. It's all boarded-up for now, as it's a construction site.

A brand-new lounge pavilion is being built between gates 6/7 on the ramp side of the terminal, adjacent to WH Smith.
