Quoting QANTAS077 (Reply 1): should have done MEL-LAX yesterday, its not coming back and that a/c is VH-EBY.
Can a 743 fly LAX-MEL and why is QF flying a 743 not a 744 or was it just so they can park it in the desert, and then why would they just not have flown it to GYR or one like that

I know it was a 1way flight, the flight back to MEL on the 29th was 744 operated, where the 743 is now is anyones guess, I suspect its going to a storage facility.

Yeah, and pretty full up with 406 p.o.b., inbound from MEL to AKL. I went to see it and unfortunately the pics I took weren't great due to the dreary conditions at AKL and I didn't stay to watch it depart for LAX. I would assume it'd head straight to the graveyard because it has no use standing around LAX. I think I'll miss the loudness of this classic. You could really distinguish it from other planes at the airport when it was taxiing to the gate, especially last night when it was quiet.

Sweet departed with 331POB to LAX. Required full length off 05R and used every bit of it. No photos as was nearly dark departed 2040 almost an hour late. and weather was terrible , was in the clouds by about 200ft.
I was out on Saturday and saw it depart aswell was even later got some shots of the arrival. On departure they were having a good chat with the apron guys and they gave it a water salute send off for the engineers final flight! Unfortunatly was even later at 2115 departure.

This is one of the photos of it that I took taxiing back to the terminal. You really do expect better quality from a $1000 camera! Too bad the weather turned against me.

Sad to see the 747-300s go. Nice classic planes. I knew a couple of the FE's that did a lot of the recent LAX flights.
Nice people. The man still couldn't work out why on earth I'd be so determined to photograph a red and white Airbus A380..

Who knows! Possibly.. I go when I can or when I know something special's on. Generally around holiday times. That makes it 2 times in the last 2 days! I usually have a 400D around my neck and nowadays a scanner with ipod earphones. Mainly 3 spots for me: domestic carpark (my car was the only one parked up there today), NZ MX carpark, lookout area at the end of the runway. I really need to upgrade my lens.

LOL yes, his comment does have some merit, I still reckon the "Queen of the skies" is a better looking ac. (says one who has 2 framed QF A380 photos in the study side by side with the 744 and one of an SP).

Awww so sad to see the 743s go, my first 747 flight was on 743 VH-EBT, QF25 MEL-AKL back in Nov 2006, one of the best flights I have ever had and those engines
It's sad to see the classics go, are all of the 743s now in storage in the desert, or are the others still to be ferried over? and does anyone know whats going to happen to them...are they to be scrapped, or are they up for sale?
Oh well, atleast there are new big birds entering the fleet...

I've had the privelage to fly on VH-EBY from HNL to SYD two years back - was by far one of the best aircraft in the QF Fleet. I'll miss those 743's rotating at PER for an eastbound destination.

Quoting QANTAS077 (Reply 5): its off to Marana, not sure if its there yet or is going in the coming days.
the flight on the 29th was the final commercial flight of a QF 743.
Oh, it's still in flight... Just! And that concludes QF's Classic Era. I didn't have a chance to fly in one unless I wanted to pay $500 for Monday's flight.. Only if I had more money..
Quoting TN486 (Reply 13): thank you for the photo, I have heaps, but that is a special one (last flight and all)
No worries. I hoped to get photos of A.Net quality but the weather gods prevented me from getting a good shot.

Anyone who knows the flight hours/cycles of those QF 743s? Beyond 100.000 hours I guess.
Are all going to be scrapped or is there a chance to see one of them flying the Hadj next year?

I never got up to RME to see the other QF 743 there. I wonder if they scrapped it?
