Can someone tell me why South African Airlines park up their B747's all day at LHR? For instance, they arrive around 7.00am local and depart sometime after 6.00pm. Why don't they have a short turnaround and head back to Jo'burg/Durban etc?

Well, its all about timings,If they did head staright back they would land @ about 01:00 and manyy ppl dont want that so they ytake off in da eve get to sa at a respectible time and the a/c gets a good clean/looking after by the nice ppl @ LHR

Often, there's two SAL 747s parked on a remote stand, I think when I was last there (a few Sundays ago), there was a 744 at T1, and a 744 and 74L (SP) in the maintenance area, alongside two CX 744s and a QF 744. All this was in the maintenance area where BA, BM, United and Air-India have their big facilities.
