Welcome everyone to a brand new year.
I wish all of you a super duper 2009!

Just look at this photo above. Can you believe it? Out of nowhere TK started operating 2 former JetAirways 777-300ERs on a 6 month wet lease base. One more to arrive soon, and the lease goes till the end of summer of 2011. Not only TK is flying them to HKG, BKK, LHR initially but offering F service after a long brake, with top of the line 8 F suites on board.
I have to admit I am one of the few ones here that thought 777s are too big of a plane for TK. But here we are, and only time will tell how they will perform, especially in these economic times.

These are very exciting times for TK and for us talking about them here at a.net.

Couple more things about TK;
-Jan 19th was the latest deadline for the big 75 plane order. Any rumors if it will go this time? Which way is it swinging?
-4x 321s coming from Kingfisher, any news on that front?
-Can someone confirm TK has the last 343, to bring the number to 9 frames?
-2x 332s still arriving Feb/Apr?
-By the way, I left IST this morning, Sunday on a 8:15 am TK flight and it was very very crowded. So many foreigners; either tourists or transit but what is going to happen?IST seems to be reaching its limits.

Also any news on other Turkish carriers?
-Pegasus will keep its order of brand new 738s?
-What will KK do after returning CRJs, and getting back to an all 320 fleet?
-Onur is quiet. No news is good news?

Thanks everyone for keeping these threads very informative/civil and staying away from personal attacks or political arguments. These threads have been going on for over 2 years now. Thanks to all.
So bring on your views, ideas, rumors on Turkish Aviation...

Hi everyone, I wish a happy and great new year.
It is great to see a T7 in TK colours.
The new TK site looks better than the old one but they still have some way to go.

the second ex-Jamaica 340 (TC-JIJ) arrived at the end of November as far as I remember

While at IST, have you seen any construction work? Until the end of 2009 the extension of the International Terminal should be finished?

To answer TK787s question, IST has a room to grow terminal wise. They can extend the exsiting terminal even further to the east but the issue is the aircraft parking space. I have been telling since 1992 that the military base has to go. Let's see if it's gonna take two decades or longer for that to happen.  Smile

- As far as PGT is concerned, the airline will need those additional frames now that they have received authority to run scheduled flights between Russia and AYT. I don't remember the airports that they got the authority , but they are some BFE airports  Smile

- Atlas returned CRJ900s for sure. The problem is they were wayy to expensive to lease, almost at the level of 2-5 year old 738s. I heard 275K/month or so. If you think about it there are 735s that lease for 59K/month. They are not the same, i know but you can put more butts on 735s generating more revenue. If you ask me Tuncay Doganer should be banned from running another airline for his entire life.

- Also, on a completely different note is the status of General Aviation in Turkey. Take a look at the small plane manufacturers around Turkey from countries like Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Iran, Greece, Russia.. They all have some private firms manufacturing small aircraft from 2 to 4 seat range. By considering general aviation an evil ('ocu' in turkish) past and present administrations killed the sprit and economics of manufacturing training aircraft. This is the country that produced fighters in 30s. Anything that has got to do with general aviation is being taxed heavily or flat out being banned in Turkey.

I think he had a good concept at the time of building Atlasjet into quality international scheduled service operation, but lots has changed in the mean time not the least being the entire ownership structure of Atlasjet and their new marching orders.

Do you know the exact bilateral of Russia-Turkey??
Is Pegasus not allowed to fly to MOW? Why such random destinations?
I have the impression, TK struggles with even LED, as the frequencies are still 4wkly and Moscow even in Winter is 3daily.

TKfan,
Thanks for your kind words.
It was way too early and dark this morning to see any construction work. What kind of extension? How big any ideas?
But Bahadir is right. IST is a parking lot and as usual we were shuttled to a remote stand for our flight this morning.
Other news:
-This morning the newly added BKK flight TK62 was operated with 332 and let me tell you, the gate was jam packed.
-I missed the take off of 777 to LHR even though it took off within minutes of my flight. I was on the wrong side.
-This months Skylife magazine and the current "new" TK website have different numbers on fleet pages.
-Last few days I saw a new TK commercial on tv featuring the new 1st class service.

By the way, here is TR "fresh out of oven". I took this flight less than 10 hours ago:

Not the new one - it was recently ammended, however from what I understand it does not allow multiple carrier designations for destinations. In other words Pegasus must look to serve destinations TK does not.

Hi guys...

Happy new year everyone....

I am going to buy a ticket to LHR tomorrow and I will specifically choose TK 1980/1981 to get the 777. But my flight is in May and currently it is listed as 332. Do you think TK will keep running the morning flights with the 777s during the summer? I am going to fly in C class and I would like to experience the 777 although the 332 would also do it  Smile

The current International Terminal will be extended eastwards where the former Terminal C was.
I will look for a link, but as far as i remember it will be 18000sqm with 6(?) jetbridges? And if I got it right, the Domestic Terminal will also get additional 6?? The overall capacity will be increased from currently 27 million to 30 million.
Hope I do not mess up the numbers, but the news itself was not clear. Construction work should be finished until the end of 2009.
For 2010 they expect lots of visitors as Istanbul was selected as one of "European Cultural Capital 2010" besides Essen and Pécs.

Thats what I did not understand too. I remember in an interview, The Director of Turkish CAA, Mr. Aridudu said, TK serves 4 out of 10 destinations... Dont know what he meant as TK serves already six Destinations and Ufa will be the seventh.

Russia is a market which Pegasus has been very anxious to enter but was locked out due to the previous restrictive bilateral which TK had locked up. For info Russia is Turkey's 2nd largest international market after Germany.

To add more story to Russian market, I had a chance to chat with two different airline CEOs in last two years. Everyone wants to go into Russia, especially from AYT. Remember, AYT is a very hot destination for Russians, even in the slow winter times.
Russia until 2005 didn't want anyone to do charter flights in and out of their own country from/to Turkey. Scheduled services were restricted to Turkish and Aeroflot.
In late 2006 they opened up the market to a very limited Turkish Airlines airplanes to do charters.
This latest amendment allows charters and scheduled operations. Scheduled side is still far from an Open Skies agreement but it is a great progress.

TK1 is currently loaded as 343 throughout the summer in Amadeus. Also TK11 the additional frequency to JFK is a 343. However 2 of 3 flights to ORD are 332 and don't forget, this is TK, very well known for changing aircrafts shortly before.

Hi all and many thanks to you TK787 for keeping these Turkish aviation topics, even if I don't always have the time to read everything.

I came back from IST to CDG yesterday too (04 JAN), but in the evening, and indeed, it seemed to be quite crowded, at least ATC wise :
- First, CDG ATC imposed us a 50 minutes delay so we waited in the aircraft at the gate.
- Then, IST ATC made us wait 20 minutes more informing us we were number 12 (only 36R was being used for both Take-Offs and Landings, and weather was not so nice with lots of rain).

FWIW, it was also crowded when I arrived at IST on Friday (02 JAN) afternoon, we had to wait for 25 min in holding pattern before landing. And after having landed on Rwy 24, one aircraft was taxiing on the runway (I don't know why, either it landed just after us, or it did a RTO...) and I saw an aircraft going around. I just thought "Wow, it's really busy busy busy here !".

As for IST extension, the taxi driver bringing me to the airport told me that runway 06-24 will be extended Eastward. Is it true ?

Happy flying !
BoogyJay

I found the article I was referring to. Maybe this will answer your question too, BoogyJay.
As I said before, its not very obvious what will be done...
link: http://hurarsiv.hurriyet.com.tr/gost.../haber.aspx?id=10316228&yazarid=41

quick translation of some main work:

- Pax capacity will be increased from 27 to 30 million
-DHMI (State Airport Authorities) and Turkish Air Forces are close to an agreement.
(A parallel runway is planned to the existing 06/24, will be 300m longer, part of the area is owned by the Turkish AF)
-Construction of new control Tower with slow progress

-International Terminal will be enlarged by 17920 sqm, having 3 jetbridges, for additional 3.5million Pax
-4557 sqm from Int.Terminal will be transferred/used by Domestic Terminal.
-the number of Jetbridges will rise to 15 (currently 9), increase Capacity by 1.2 million

I think I can read and understand Turkish very well... but this article is very confusing... Can someone translate/explain what will be done?? Big grin
