In this week's AWST (Jan. 5),

"DAE Capital, the aircraft leasing and financial business arm of Dubai Aerospace Enterprise, has signed a long-term lease with Air New Zealand for two Boeing 777-300 Extended Range aircraft. The aircraft are due for delivery in January and March 2011..."

My guess is that there will be more leases coming and NZ will eventaully replace all their 744s with 773s.

Doesn't NZ use GE engines on their 772ER's if so, this should dovetail even better for them!

I could be wrong , but I think that this is a sale and leaseback of 2 of the -300ERs which NZ already had on order , not additional aircraft

Doesn't make a difference as the engines are leased by NZ and hence don't have to worry about the parts being similar etc.

I think we'll be waiting a fair while for the extra order of 77Ws

It's all about the destination AND the journey.

I think Kiwiandrew is right here.... NZ has a habit of owning half/leasing half its fleet (it makes sense financially to do this).
You are correct however in saying that NZ is looking to replace its 744s with 77W... just a year or 2 late in saying so. NZ announced this quite a while back... after the Rugby World Cup the 744s would be replaced by 77W. NZ is not interested in the A380 and at this stage is not interested in the 748 either. Basically NZs longhaul fleet should be entirely 787s by 2013-15 with the exception of 77W. NZ will likely replace its 772ER with 7810 if that aircraft has the suitable range and is offered.

56 types. 38 countries. 24 airlines.

You mean bought, not brought.
