Seeing pictures of the CASA C295 made me wondering, why is this aircraft no being used by civil airlines (freight and passenger) ? The original CASA IPTN CN-235 was at leased used by some airlines (Binter Canarias comes to my mind).

The only idea I have is that EADS also owns ATR and that the two aircraft would compete against each other.

Are there any other reasons ? Does the C295 not have good enough economics to compete against the Dash 8, ATR etc.....

Is it too expensive ?

Especially for rural areas in Asia and Africa the C295 would make sense for airlines.

Probably too much of an aircraft for passenger operations. It has been designed as a military application - just as the G.222, DHC5, AN72 who have also seen very limited civil pax service. One major design drawback probably is the ramp.

Those airlines in Indonesia and Spain who operated the CN235 for political reasons dumped it pretty quickly.

I guess it is too heavy and therefore can not compete with the ATRs/Dash etc.....

Would it be an option for Freight airlines ? There are some Bae 146s/ATRs hauling cargo so maybe this would be a niche ? But again it might be cheaper to buy a second hand ATR and convert it into a freighter.
