Yesterday, a friend's parents had the following itinerary: ROC-JFK-BUD on DL. The ROC-JFK flight was delayed from 4:30 to 5:47 PM, arriving in JFK approximately 25 minutes before the departure of the next flight. As we all know what a pain JFK is sometimes, even if they landed on time, taxiing to the gate is always somewhat lengthy.
First of all, before I put my question forward, I want to make it clear I am not criticizing Delta in any way...I was just wondering if the right action was taken.
I talked to my friend who is currently studying in Rochester and he asked me what chances they have not to be stuck in JFK(that was before the flight from ROC actually took off). I told him that they may be put on AF or KL and connect the following morning in CDG/AMS to BUD. If I were in the situation, I'd have probably asked to be put on AF...but I don't know how well his parents can speak/understand English. So, Delta told them they are stuck in NYC until today for the same flight to BUD and that they wouldn't pay for a hotel because it was an ATC-related delay.
Wouldn't it have been normal and easier to be put on AF/KL to CDG/AMS and connect in Europe instead of having them pay at least $100 for a hotel room?
I repeat, I'm not blaming Delta for anything...I'm just asking what better actions could have been taken.

Where aviation is not the side show, it's the main show!!!

Even though DL and AF have a codeshare, that doesn't mean AF can just accept DL's passengers. AF still has to recieve compensation for taking them from DL. Becuase they listed it as ATC, DL wouldn't be responsible for the outcome. The cheapest thing for DL is to keep them on their own flight the next day.

What if Delta itself had a flight to CDG/AMS? Is it expensive for them to have pax coonect with another airline for a 2-hr segment?
If one remembers the issue with immigration in the US on 08/11/2007 I have had a similar situation flying LAX-ATL-STR. Checked in at LAX and took my seat right at STD. 2 of my classmates and my teacher didn't manage to catch the LAX-ATL flight hence missing the connection to STR and they were put on AF ATL-CDG-STR. Still, it wasn't delta's fault they missed the connection.

Cheapest, but it would be the best customer service to put them on the next available flight on an interline carrier. Ay National CO has often put me on US or DL because of ATC delays in EWR.

DL does not have a DL-metal flight JFK-CDG... under the joint venture, AF operates all flights on that route with its own metal.
DL has one 752 flight per day on JFK-AMS. It leaves two hours before JFK-BUD, so that wasn't an option, either.
The moral of the story is: book extremely long connections through JFK anytime from early afternoon through late evening, especially if you're connecting to the last (or only) flight of the day on your outbound route.

Yes.. dont blame Delta.. but you can blame Terminal 2 and 3. Yes there are always delay at JFK (especially departure taxiing) but Terminal 2 and 3 seem to have way longer delay upon arrival because the unavailablity of the gates. (other terminals almost dont have that)

All right! Thanks folks Luckily, I haven't experienced any overnight delays. Just one missed connection flying LGW-BUD-TSR due to bad weather in LON area.
Thanks a lot!
