Is there a "formula" to how many planes an airline needs to accomplish a certain route system or is it worked out 1-plane-1-day at a time until the plan is filled?

I noticed for example the same aircraft might operate say LON/PAR/LON/PAR/LON for 4 days and then not go back to that city for a while.

Just curious how it works ...
